Oakland's homeless population ticks up despite general drop for Alameda County
Alameda County is seeing an overall drop in its homeless population, but one East Bay city is lagging behind on the trend.County officials recently released a snapshot of its homelessness picture. Countywide, homelessness dropped by 3% with unsheltered homelessness decreasing 11% since 2022.The numbers also say there was a 19% increase in the number of people accessing shelter.However, in Alameda County's largest city of Oakland, the number of homeless people went up by 9% over the last two years.Still, officials noted that is less than the trend from 2015 to 2022 when Oakland averaged increases of 32% between counts.County leaders said they were encouraged by the progress, but acknowledged that there was much more work to be done.
BPD: Man arrested after groping 2 women at bus stop next to Cal
A man who groped two young women Friday at a bus stop right next to UC Berkeley is in custody this week, authorities said. Berkeley police say 30-year-old Shan Woods (homeless) groped two women at the same bus stop on Friday evening before he was arrested nearby in the Southside neighborhood.
BPD: Police arrest man with gun who tried to hide from cops
Berkeley police arrested a man who was spotted downtown holding a gun Tuesday afternoon and attempted to evade capture, authorities report. The man tried to hide in a downtown parking garage, but police found him as well as the handgun he had tried to ditch under a parked car, Berkeley police said.
Boy, 5, who drowned at Bethel Island identified by Contra Costa County coroner's office
The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office on Tuesday identified a 5-year-old boy who drowned over the weekend on Bethel Island.Lucas Zhang was from Livermore. He was found submerged near the docks at Bethel Island by a rescue diver Saturday and was pronounced dead at a hospital. Deputies from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 400 block of Halcyon Place in Bethel Island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in response to a report of a missing child. Deputies searched for the boy, who was believed to have fallen into the water. Sheriff's office marine patrol deputies also searched, and a diver from the fire district entered the water near the docks to search for him. The diver found the boy around 5:10 p.m. Rescuers immediately attempted life-saving measures and the child was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hayward man, 25, leaves hospital, still missing after 3 weeks
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. - A 25-year-old Hayward man has been missing since last month and his family is asking for the public’s help to find him. Dennis Chau was seen leaving San Leandro Hospital on April 24 before he was seen for an ultrasound appointment. His family reports he does not have a mobile phone, or any money.
Man charged in connection with two dozen retail thefts at San Francisco stores
SAN FRANCISCO – A Daly City man is facing multiple felony charges in connection with more than two dozen retail thefts targeting San Francisco stores, prosecutors announced Tuesday. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins' office has charged 20-year-old Cuauhtemoc Ramirez with three counts of robbery, seven counts of organized retail theft, 23 counts of commercial burglary and 23 counts of grand theft.
