Brighton businesses describe 'unbelievable' boost from Starz Hollow
Brighton businesses have reported varying results, including (for some) their best sales weekend ever, from the area's third Destination Starz Hollow . The free, immersive event took over Main Street on Sept. 26-27. Destination Starz Hollow transforms downtown into the fictional town of Stars Hollow from "Gilmore Girls." In doing so, the festivities draw thousands of visitors. The event's organizers estimate more than $10 million was driven into the community in September, with attendees from across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. 'My best weekend in fifty-one years' Pat Bayless — owner of Wood 'N Things at 200 Hyne St. — said this year's event prompted her best sales weekend ever. The family-owned shop carries a range of decorations, and participated as an "immersive business" for Destination Starz Hollow. "This was my best weekend in the fifty-one years I've been in business," Bayless told The Daily. While she didn't share specific sales figures, Bayless described the weekend as "unbelievable," pointing to high traffic, great weather and a positive response from visitors. Each year, she said, organizers seem to learn and improve from the previous year. Bayless believes attendance was also boosted by visits from prominent cast members Scott Patterson, Sean

Company reaches agreement with EPA on toxic Washtenaw Co. site
A Washtenaw County company has agreed to clean up toxic solvent under Ann Arbor and nearby communities, federal officials said Friday. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it has reached an agreement with Gelman Sciences LLC to clean up soil and groundwater in Ann Arbor and Scio Townships contaminated by a former medical filter manufacturing plant. The area, which is about four miles long and a mile wide, was declared a Superfund site in March . The site's addition to the EPA's Superfund National Priorities List meant its long-term, permanent cleanup is eligible for federal funding. "Since adding the Gelman Sciences site to the National Priorities List in March, EPA has moved quickly to put strong oversight and clear expectations in place," Anne Vogel, administrator for EPA Region 5, said in a statement. "This order provides a focused path for accelerating critical work to protect residents and advance long-term aquifer restoration, demonstrating EPA’s commitment to delivering effective and timely Superfund cleanups." The contamination has spread through the soil and groundwater beneath Ann Arbor and Scio Township for decades. Authorities determined the source was the former Gelman Sciences facility on South Wagner Road, where the company made medical filters from 1963-1986.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the administrative settlement with Gelman Sciences LLC on Friday, marking the first major enforcement step since the company's contamination site was added to the federal Superfund list earlier this year.
