HUBERT, N.C. (WNCN) — A U.S. Marine Corps base at the North Carolina coast will be firing live rockets this weekend for upcoming deployment training, officials said.

Officials at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune issued an alert Tuesday about noise impacts on the surrounding Onslow County areas created by “live fire training” on Sunday.

A detailed report on Sunday’s training includes rocket fire and mortar fire starting at 8 a.m. to just before midnight. Less than two weeks ago, Marines on Camp Lejeune trained with live fire using the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

Camp Lejune officials say training can be heard by nearby residents as “loud artillery, low-flying aircraft, weapons or demolition noise.”

The impact area this weekend is located east of the Neuse River and east of N.C. 172/Sneads Ferry Road on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

“A unit preparing for deployment will be executing live fire training to support completion of pre-deployment training,” the alert from Camp Lejeune officials said.

The live fire warning is for the G-10 impact area and is about two miles from Onslow Beach. The G-10 impact area is for air-to-ground weapons and ground-based weapons.

The G-10 impact area can be used for indirect artillery firings, infantry weapons, certain air-delivered ordnance, and laser operations.

Both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft are authorized to train in the G-10 Impact Area, a Camp LeJeune report in 2014 said.

Officials said the live-fire training will impact “quiet hours” on Sunday.

“This training is crucial to ensure the unit is fully prepared to meet its upcoming commitments overseas,” the news release said.

Other live-fire training this week in the same area will not affect quiet hours, but includes naval gunfire, fighter aircraft bombs along with artillery fire, rocket fire and mortar fire, officials said.
