Brenham ISD Debates Fiscal Health vs. Competitive Pay
BRENHAM — The Brenham Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees convened for its second budget workshop, navigating a delicate balancing act between rebuilding its depleted financial reserves and maintaining competitive staff salaries amidst a 2.8% cost-of-living increase. The workshop highlighted the district’s dramatic turnaround since absorbing 50 professional positions two summers ago to stave off financial insolvency. Following the passage of a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) last year—which granted average teacher salary increases of 13% to 15%—the administration presented a newly stabilized five-year trajectory. Superintendent Clay Gillentine projected that the district intends to restore an average of $1 million annually to its fund balance over the next five years. However, a philosophical divide emerged among trustees regarding how heavily to fund employee raises versus the district's "savings account".
