    C-I boys track continues its strong early surge

    The Cambridge-Isanti boys track and field team put together a strong effort at the Bob Stewart Invitational held at Mounds View High School on Tuesday, April 30.

    One event where the Bluejackets excelled at that meet was 110-meter hurdles, where they swept the top three spots. Senior Riley Wilson won that race with a time of 16.10, while his twin brother Micah was second (16.71) and fellow senior Tristan Kiriago was third (16.82).

    C-I also dominated the pole vault, taking four of the top six places. Micah Wilson won by clearing 13-6, while sophomore Calvin Piescher was third and junior Lucas Frank was fourth despite clearing the same height. The top places were determined by number of misses.

    Sophomore Wesley Kennedy placed sixth by clearing 13-0.

    Another strong Cambridge-Isanti finish came in the discus, where junior Jay Ziebarth was third (136-10), sophomore Dominick Olson was fourth (131-9) and sophomore Deven Olson was eighth (124-9).

    Other top finishers for the Bluejackets included senior Jonas Kennedy, who placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:36.20; Riley Wilson, who took second in the 300 hurdles with a 41.36 clocking; and junior Jaden Kuhlman, who placed second in the triple jump (41-6) and third in the long jump (20-3).

    Cambridge-Isanti tied for third place in a Mississippi 8 meet held on Monday, April 29, at Chisago Lakes Golf Course.

    The Bluejackets shot a 202 to tie St. Francis for third.

    Leading the way individually was sophomore Hannah Westman, who tied for sixth with a 47; freshman Allie Nystrom fired a 49 to tie for 10th.

    Three days later C-I finished seventh in an M8 event held at Elk River Golf Club. Nystrom was the top individual for the Bluejackets, tying for 15th with a 109 score.

    Cambridge-Isanti finished seventh in a rain-shortened Mississippi 8 event held at Pebble Creek Golf Club on Tuesday, April 30.

    Junior Josh Sauro finished with a 41 to tie for 15th at Pebble Creek. Seventh grader Keegan Westman was one shot behind Sauro to tie for 23rd, while senior Dalton Muehlberg finished with a 44 to tie for 29th.

    The Cambridge-Isanti boys tennis team has won its last four matches, beginning with a 5-2 victory over Mississippi 8 rival Becker on Wednesday, April 23.

    The Bluejackets won three of the four singles matches and two of three doubles matches to secure the victory.

    On Tuesday, April 30, C-I claimed a 5-2 win over Duluth East in an important match for its Section 7AA seeding, again earning wins in three of four singles matches and two doubles matches.

    The next day the Bluejackets defeated another Section 7AA foe by sweeping Andover 7-0, losing just one set in those seven matches.

    Cambridge-Isanti then closed the week with another shutout victory, beating Big Lake 7-0 on Friday, May 3.

    The Cambridge-Isanti baseball team experienced an up-and-down week.

    The week began with the Bluejackets splitting a doubleheader at Chisago Lakes on Wednesday, May 1. Chisago Lakes won the opener 6-1, but C-I bounced back to claim a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

    Two days later Cambridge-Isanti dropped a 17-0 decision at Becker, giving the Bluejackets a 2-9 record overall and a 2-7 mark in Mississippi 8 action.

    The Cambridge-Isanti softball team split its three contests last week: winning one, losing one, and tying one.

    The week began with a 1-1 tie in a Mississippi 8 contest at St. Francis on Tuesday, April 30.

    The next day the Bluejackets lost at Chisago Lakes 4-1, but C-I bounced back two days later to knock off Becker 3-2.

    Cambridge-Isanti entered this week with a 6-6-1 overall record and was fourth in the M8 with a 4-3-1 mark.

    Vikings baseball

    The North Branch baseball team went on the road on Tuesday, April 30, to take on the Cloquet Lumberjacks, losing by a final score of 4-3.

    Following the Vikings’ big upset win over Mississippi 8 opponent Princeton back on April 23, the boys saw the Tigers once again in a rematch and unfortunately couldn’t keep up the pace, losing 17-1 on Friday, May 3.

    The next day, the Vikings went up to Duluth for a doubleheader with Duluth Denfeld and Hermantown, losing both of those matchups 9-2 and 4-0, respectively.

    North Branch sits at a 4-9 record on the season and is 4-4 in the M8.

    Vikings softball

    The North Branch softball team kicked off its week with a 4-3 win over a tough conference opponent in Monticello on Tuesday, April 30.

    The girls then wrapped up the week with a pair of close road losses to Zimmerman (1-0) and Princeton (2-0) on Wednesday, May 1, and Friday, May 3, respectively.

    After a 1-2 outing, the girls are now currently 3-10 on the campaign.

    Vikings boys tennis

    The North Branch boys tennis team endured two consecutive home losses to Monticello (0-7) and Pine City (0-7) on Thursday, April 25, and Friday, May 3, respectively.

    The North Branch girls golf team saw action at the Elk River Golf Course on Thursday, April 25, in a Mississippi 8 Conference Invitational.

    The Vikings placed third overall as a team with a 424, trailing only eight strokes behind St. Francis (416) and ahead of Monticello (437) in fourth place.

    Two Viking golfers placed within the top 10 as Ashley Bistodeau took first place with an impressive 84, while Jenna Minke fired a 92, which was good for a three-way tie in third place.

    On Monday, April 29, the team participated in a varsity conference meet at Chisago Lakes Golf Course. As a team, the unit shot a total of 231, good for fifth place behind St. Francis (202) in fourth and ahead of Princeton (260) in sixth.

    Individually, Bistodeau shot a score of 51 to earn 16th, while Minke was not far behind at a 57 for 27th overall.

    The North Branch boys golf team began its week at Pebble Creek Golf Club, where the squad saw action vs. conference opponents on Tuesday, April 30.

    The boys shot a 164 as a team for fourth place, just behind Princeton (155) in third and ahead of Becker (165) in fifth.

    Individually, Nick Melvin led the Vikings by firing off a 38, taking fifth overall, while Tyler Minke, the next highest place finisher for North Branch, took 15th with a 41, on top of Carter Magnison earning 23rd for shooting a 42.

    The North Branch boys and girls track and field teams took part in the Bison Invitational at Buffalo High School on Tuesday, April 30.

    On the boys side, junior Zachary Sway claimed second in the 200 in 24.50, while junior Brody Rothe earned third for a time of 16.74 in the 110 hurdles. Blake Lelm, a senior, wound up in sixth in that event with a 17.77.

    Rothe also took third in the 300 hurdles, with Lelm nabbing second in the high jump. Eli Steinke tied for second-place in the pole vault finals, recording a mark of 8-0.

    On the girls side, junior Sophia Benedict claimed first place by less than a half a second in the 200, securing a time of 27.79, while junior Ella Kuhlman took third in 27.93.

    A trio of Vikings placed within the top 10 in the 400 as freshman Sophia Thorsen (3rd), junior Dakota Esget (4th) and junior Derrian Dick (6th) all recorded sub 1:05 times.

    In the Coon Rapids Invitational on Friday, May 3, the Vikings competed with a variety of metro schools and put up solid numbers throughout.

    Rothe took fourth in the 300 hurdles with a 42.07, with Carson Weber, a senior, finishing in second in the triple jump finals on a 41-01 mark.

    For the girls, Kuhlman took sixth in 13.33 in the 100, and Thorsen took first in the 200. Senior Madison Whitman earned fourth in the 400, recording a 1:04.53.

    A second senior, Shaeyna Andreotti, finished third in the 100 hurdles with a 17.64.

    Bombers baseball

    The Braham baseball team continued its hot streak, defeating Ogilvie 12-2 on the road on Tuesday, April 30, before knocking off Cromwell-Wright 10-0 on Friday, May 3.

    Following the wins, the team sits at a comfortable 9-2 overall record and 6-1 in Great River Conference play. The Bombers enter the week on a five-game winning streak.

    The Braham softball team is also on a roll as of late, winning its last three matchups against Great River Conference opponents.

    The Bombers knocked off Mille Lacs 7-5 on Thursday, April 30, beat Ogilvie 10-0 on Tuesday, April 30, then whipped Crosby-Ironton 15-0 on Saturday, May 4.

    The trio of wins has the Bombers at an impressive 10-1 overall record and 5-1 in Great River Conference play.

    The Braham boys and girls golf teams hosted a varsity invitational meet at Purple Hawk Golf Course on Tuesday, April 30.

    As a team, the girls tabbed a score of 417, good for first place.

    Senior star Madison Davis (95) earned the top spot among all golfers, while Jenna Burmaster and Delaney Johnson tied each other’s scores for a 106 total, bringing them to a two-way tie for third place.

    Elizabeth Fix (110) was part of a two-way tie for fourth place.

    On the boys side, Ethan Schroeder took home medalist honors by firing a 90, while Luke Fix and Riley Gould finished with scores of 122 and 126, respectively.

    Bombers track and field

    The Braham boys and girls track and field teams most recently competed at the Chuck Johnson Invitational on Thursday, May 2, at Princeton High School.

    Tanner Doble took third in the 400 (55.45), while senior Skyler Belsheim recorded first in the high jump by clearing 6-0. Brycen Lotz, a senior, claimed first in the shot put with a best throw of 37-6.

    On the girls side, junior Ava Johnson wound up in second place in 2:39.79 in the 800.

    Tigers baseball

    Following the 10-0 win at home vs. Mille Lacs on Tuesday, April 30, the Rush City baseball team lost for the first time this season.

    The Tigers suffered a 4-3 loss to Crosby-Ironton on the road on Wednesday, May 1.

    The Tigers are now 5-1 on the year but remain undefeated in Great River Conference play at 5-0.

    The Rush City softball team racked up a pair of wins vs. Pine City in a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 1, by scores of 13-0 and 13-1.

    Following the wins, the Tigers have an 8-1 record on the season and are 7-1 in the Great River Conference.

    The Rush City boys and girls golf teams saw action at the Purple Hawk Golf Course on Tuesday, April 30.

    The boys team shot a 454 for a fourth-place finish overall. Gabe Widenstrom led the way for the Tigers by shooting a 100.

    On the girls side, Ruth Widenstrom shot a 118 and placed fifth overall.

    The Rush City track and field team hosted the Rush City Tigerama meet on Tuesday, April 30.

    On the boys side, Jamison Wood tallied a second-place slot of the 100, and Joseph Kao finished eighth in the 200.

    Sophomore James Monson would take a sixth-place finish in the 1600 with a time of 5:12.21, with junior Braden Niessen taking fifth in the 110 meter hurdles.

    For the girls, Kennedy Stavig earned second in the 100, and Clara Niessen placed sixth in the 800 in 2:53.87.

    Senior Lydia Bengtson nabbed third in the 100 hurdles, while also taking second in the 300 hurdles.

    Kendra Heintz would place second in the high jump finals.
