Gary Norris selected as new Salina City Commissioner
The next Salina City commissioner will be Gary Norris beginning in just a few weeks. This comes after three current commissioners voted in the affirmation for Norris, with only Doug Rempp voting nay. Each of the commissioners had the opportunity to nominate someone for the position, with Trent Davis nominating Norris. Other nominees included Commissioner Greg Lenkiewicz nominating Haley Helzer and Commissioner Doug Rempp nominating Brian Weisel. Commissioner Mike Hoppock said all of those he thought about nominating were taken by the other three, so he declined to add to the list. Only one vote needed for selection The by-laws of the Salina City Commission states that the process to choose a new commissioner to fill a vacant seat is done by Robert's Rules of Order. In this case, that means that a vote would be taken on each of the candidates, in the order in which they were accepted, with the first to receive three affirmative votes selected to the position. Davis, being first on the roll call, had his nomination of Norris come forward first, so after the three commissioners voted in favor of him, the process closed, with no other voted needed. Norris will take his seat
