Early Augusta developers
John Wesley Ground (J. W.) was born on March 26, 1847 in Monroe County, Indiana to Andrew and Lavina Ground, the third of six children. His parents, Andrew and Lavina came to Augusta in 1879 and engaged in the milling business. John was in his 30s and he, his wife and small children accompanied his parents to Augusta. Andrew and John took over the ownership of the City Steam Mill and the water mill on the outskirts of Augusta. In 1870 the Manly Brothers built the Augusta City Mills and operated them until 1879 when they were purchased by Andrew and son, John. The new owners completely remodeled the mills. Four buhr stones were kept in motion by a sixty horsepower engine and had a capacity of 60 barrels of fine flour per day. The mill building was a structure measuring 40×50 and 2 stories high. It stood adjacent to the Santa Fe Railway line in the southern part of the city. Father, Andrew, was also the senior member of the firm of Ground & Given, dealers in general merchandise. He and his son, John, operated an extensive seed store in Augusta. Prior to coming to Augusta, they were in the mill business in Chanute as well as other cities.
