CALEXICO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two separate attempts to smuggle drugs into the U.S. were stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers last week, the agency said Friday.
On Wednesday around 5:00 p.m., CBP officer at the Calexico West Port of Entry stopped a 43-year-old man driving a white 2007 truck into the U.S. from Mexico.
After a second inspection and a full scan of the vehicle, authorities discovered there were irregularities within an air compressor in the bed of the truck, according to CBP. A K9 team later responded and alerted officers to the presence of drugs.
CBP said a total of 11 packages of methamphetamine were discovered in the air compressor, weighing a total of about 209 pounds.
Shortly after 5:00 p.m. last Friday, CBP officers at the same port of entry stopped a 31-year-old man driving a blue 2005 truck entering from Mexico. In this separate incident, authorities found nine packages also hidden inside an air compressor in the bed of the truck.
CBP said the packages, which weighed a total of about 135 pounds, tested positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Both drivers were turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation, while the narcotics and involved vehicles were seized by CBP officers.
