Rock County voters approve two of three proposed constitutional amendments

JANESVILLE — Rock County voters approved two of three proposed state constitutional amendments on Tuesday’s ballot, mirroring the statewide results on all three questions. The amendments addressed the governor’s partial veto authority, the government’s ability to close places of worship during a public emergency and prohibitions on governmental preferential treatment based on race, sex, national origin or ethnicity. The measures were placed on the ballot by the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature, which passed the proposals during two consecutive legislative sessions. Question 1: Wisconsin’s partial veto Rock County voters narrowly approved a proposal that prohibits future governors from using their partial veto authority to increase taxes or fees. The measure received 32,086 yes votes (49.16%) and 33,188 no votes (50.84%) in Rock County. Statewide, voters approved the amendment with 1,302,896 yes votes (50.7%) and 1,266,838 no votes (49.3%). The statewide result was close enough that the race was not called until 8:46 a.m. Wednesday. Republican lawmakers proposed the amendment following Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ 2023 use of the partial veto to extend a school district revenue limit provision through 2425, rather than the 2024-25 school year as approved by the Legislature. Maurice West draws top spot on 2027 Rockford mayoral ballot

ROCKFORD, IL — Maurice West will appear first on the Democratic ballot for Rockford mayor after winning a Nov. 4 lottery drawing Wednesday against fellow candidate Mary McNamara Bernsten. The Rockford Board of Election Commissioners held the drawing at its office because West and McNamara Bernsten were both in line to file their petitions of candidacy at 8 a.m. on the first day of filing, Oct. 19, said Jorge Paredes, the board’s executive director. “It was only two of them that showed up at 8 a.m. on the first day of filing,” Paredes said. When candidates file at the same time, the board must conduct a draw to decide who's name is listed first on the ballot. Coins marked 1 and 2 were placed in a hat, and each candidate drew one to determine the first and second spots. State Sen. Andrew Chesney will bring high school students from across Illinois' 45th District together in Freeport for a Youth Advisory Council meeting Nov. 9. The session will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Highland Community College, according to a community announcement.
