Boys golfers play in Rice Lake invitatonal
On Thursday May 9, the Hayward Hurricanes boys golf team placed 13th out of 18 teams at the Rice Lake Invitational at Turtleback Golf Course. The meet co-medalists were Chase Van Ranst of Baldwin-Woodville and Caden Hebert of Eau Claire Memorial, both of whom shot a 71. Tanner Johnson of Hayward has been named the outstanding senior graduate of the University of Arizona-Tucson’s College of Geosciences in May, 2024. U.S. Forest Service prescribes burn to promote growth in Chequamegon Nicolai National Forest
IRON RIVER, Wis. (Northern News Now) - Residents near Iron River, Wis. may have seen some extra smoke in the sky the past few days but the fires that caused it were planned. U.S. Forest Service crews lit a prescribed burn on 900 acres of the Chequamegon Nicolai National Forest on Monday. It was the area’s second-ever prescribed burn.

Duluth, Minn. - Starting Monday, the Munger Landing Boat Launch and parking lots will be closed through Thursday, May 23. The closure is due to paving work and other restoration efforts. The DNR will also be installing a new fishing pier. Work is part of the ongoing effort to delist the St. Louis River as a Great Lakes Area of Concern due to past pollution. Some areas may remain fenced off to protect regrowing habitats.

Iron Range, Minn.- A summer lunch program is in need of volunteers. The annual Meet Up and Chow Down program put on by the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is set to return on June 3. The program provides free lunches during the summer months to area students. Meals are available every weekday except Fridays at locations across the range. Volunteers are needed in Biwabik, Chisholm, Cook, Hibbing, Hoyt Lakes, Keewatin, Nashwauk, and Virginia.
