Savannah seeks input on Tide to Town path on Montgomery Cross Road

Montgomery Cross Road is one of Savannah’s most dangerous thoroughfares. The crash rate on the corridor is 87% higher than the state average, and the injury rate is 79% higher. There is also danger for bikers and pedestrians. There were four pedestrian-related crashes between 2021 to 2025, with one resulting in a fatality. The corridor also saw 14 bike crashes and 11 injuries in the same span. But the City of Savannah is seeking to change that. The city is looking to bring the Tide to Town trail to Montgomery Cross Road and along with it, additional safety improvements for all types of transport. The city held a public engagement meeting on that vision last week that drew over 100 residents. “It’s really about getting your feedback and your engagement about how we can use these dollars that are already allocated,” said Savannah City Manager Jay Melder in a nod to the $10 million hotel-motel tax revenues devoted to Tide to Town. Savannah renews downtown shuttle contract, with calls for expansion

Savannah City Council approved a 3-year renewal of the DOT shuttle, the fare-free transportation through the city’s downtown provided by Chatham Area Transit. The contract is for $7.9 million over the 3-year term, with new fines tied to performance standards. The renewal was approved by CAT’s Board in August. While council renewed the approval, discussion centered on aspirations to grow fare-free service to the Savannah's south side. District 6 Alderman Kurtis Purtee, who represents the city’s southernmost neighborhoods, asked city staff to explore cost estimates for a DOT extension south. Purtee specifically asked for a transit option from Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus through the mid-city to downtown. Federal grant funds new truck parking in Garden City

A $12 million investment from the U.S. Department of Transportation will expand truck parking options near the Port of Savannah, addressing a growing need for safe, designated spaces for drivers serving one of the nation’s busiest container ports. The Port of Savannah Commercial Motor Vehicle Parking Area will be built next to Highway 21 in Garden City, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who announced the project Wednesday at Gulfstream Aerospace. The facility will include 275 commercial vehicle spaces, providing parking for truckers who often struggle to find safe places to stop between hauls, Duffy said. “Truck parking is one of the most persistent challenges faced by American truckers today, and under President Trump and Secretary Duffy, we’re tackling it head on,” Federal Motor Carrier Administrator Derek D.
