Rodent droppings in soda syrup. Beaufort Co.'s worst October food inspections

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) has released its October food inspection reports. Two restaurants, two schools and a Parker’s scored less than A. Inspectors from the SCDA inspect restaurants and other food-serving establishments across the state on a routine basis. The frequency of inspections is based on the establishment’s risk-factor for food-borne illness and its compliance history, according to the SCDA. Grades are awarded on a 100-point scale, with A grades above 87 points, B 78 points, and C less than 78 points. Repeat infractions can result in lower letter grades no matter the points. Here’s why these Beaufort County establishments received their grades, and if their violations were corrected: E-Tang Asian Bistro Inspectors awarded E-Tang Asian Bistro, located at 811 William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head Island, a C grade with 75 points in its Oct.15 routine inspection. Inspectors observed: An employee drinking from an open cup and eating from a bowl on the hot line Employees failing to wash hands between cleaning and food preparation, an employee washing hands without soap, and an employee washing hands in a food preparation sink “Fresh rodent droppings in a pool of Lemon-Lime Soda Syrup,” as well as rodent droppings

What is the ‘rocks’ charge on my Charleston restaurant bill? It isn’t for ice.

Is it just me, or are more and more Charleston restaurants leaving the prices off of their online menus? Like most diners, I prefer to know how much items cost ahead of a visit, especially when we're eating with kids and might be in a rush. When dish prices aren't made available, it doesn't just ruin my pre-dinner scouting mission — it makes me wonder why they're trying to hide them. At restaurants, surprises are typically a good thing. But that's rarely the case when it comes to the bill, which brings me to our first Tip Jar inquiry of the week. Submit your restaurant, dining and food questio...

4 Best Grocery Stores To Buy Steak, According To Southern Chefs

For many of us, one-stop shopping is the most efficient way to stock the kitchen for the week ahead. While going to a butcher to purchase things like steak or lamb, or a cheesemonger to buy a block of hard cheese and a baguette, may sound nice, in theory, the convenience of a big grocery store offering all of these items and more is hard to beat.

The Lowcountry's standout spots for shrimp and grits

You can find dozens of variations on this classic Southern dish in restaurants across the country. But there's something special about eating shrimp and grits in the Lowcountry, where the main ingredients are so close to home. Shrimp and grits have been a staple in coastal Southern kitchens for generations, but when and where did the dish originate? Sources like the Levine Museum of the New South suggest shrimp and grits was likely the result of a convergence of Gullah Geechee, Indigenous and European cooking traditions that started centuries ago. An early recipe for "Shrimps and Hominy" appears in the 1930 cookbook, Two Hundred Years of Charleston Cooking. Over time, the dish was eventually popularized (and fancied up) by restaurants like Crook's Corner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Husk in Charleston, South Carolina. Our list of standout shrimp and grits highlights crowd-favorite versions of this dish, both traditional and creative, where local ingredients like these are always the focus. That's thanks to farmers who still grow heritage-variety grains, like the Sea Island Yellow Guinea Flint Grits from Rollen's Raw Grains in Hardeeville, South Carolina, and purveyors like Tarvin Shrimp of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, who catch shrimp off the

The ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ is reopening. And a Charleston brewery is celebrating it with a new beer.

CHARLESTON — The developers of Magnolia Landing have announced the “Bridge to Nowhere” will reopen — and Edmund's Oast Brewery has crafted a new beer to mark the occasion. The bridge, also known as “Graffiti Bridge,” may not have a street address, but the swath of cement located near 1419 Petty St. in Charleston’s Neck Area between the Ashley River and Interstate 26 is familiar to many. The popular pedestrian bridge leads toward the future site of Magnolia Landing, and since February has been blocked off to the public with “No Trespassing” signs posted behind barricades. But Highland Resources...
