McDowell sets team records, then walks off Altoona in PIAA playoff game
When Chase Carrick took the handoff, he saw the gap. Seconds later, he was running toward his bench to celebrate with his teammates. Carrick scored on a 10-yard run in double overtime as McDowell outlasted Altoona 47-41 in a PIAA Class 6A subregional football game on Friday, Nov. 6, at James Conner Field. “I just wanted to get some yards after they didn’t score,” said Carrick. “When I saw the gap opened up I knew I was gone. I wasn’t going to mess it up.” McDowell (8-3) moves on to another PIAA subregional next week at State College after the Little Lions beat Erie High 55-0. York Catholic routs Newport in 2A semis, District 3 football scores
Michael Staub knew York Catholic had a comeback in the works. As the Fighting Irish trailed 11 points to Newport after one quarter, the junior quarterback didn't worry one bit. The Irish had been down early before, and they knew how to turn a game on a dime. So, when York Catholic needed him most, Staub took Friday night into his own hands and helped the Fighting Irish rally to a 38-14 win over the Buffaloes in the District 3 Class 2A semifinals. "I just wanted to win, man," Staub said. "I play my hardest and just got to get it done every week. We normally get down quick and we start slow, but we always keep fighting. Our coaches see stuff, we start attacking what they're not good at and keep playing. Never stop." Newport never scored again after that first quarter. York Catholic, meanwhile, scored five unanswered rushing touchdowns through the final 36 minutes. Of those touchdowns, Staub scored three. He rushed for 33 yards and passed for another 148. When Newport came knocking in the second half, Staub picked off a pass to set up another scoring drive and knocked down a deep pass on Newport's following
