The Iroquois Confederation, disturbed by this encroachment, appealed to the colonial government for intervention. In 1750, the provincial authorities responded by ordering the burning of cabins built by these unauthorized settlers, an act that would engrave the town's name in history and underscore the colonial government's dedication to treaty enforcement.
