The 2026 midterm election in Wichita and Kansas is over. Here's what you should know.

Kansas voters reshaped the state’s political landscape Tuesday, sending the first Democrat to the U.S. Senate in nearly a century, breaking a 16-year Republican supermajority in the state House and approving a $615 million school bond in Wichita. The race for governor, meanwhile, was still too close to call early Wednesday. Here is what you should know from election night in Kansas and south-central Kansas. Hamilton flips U.S. Senate seat The Rev. Adam Hamilton, a Democrat and founding pastor of the nation’s largest United Methodist church, defeated one-term Republican Sen. Roger Marshall to become Kansas’ first Democratic U.S. senator since 1932. The Associated Press called the race at 10:24 p.m., with Hamilton taking 51.7% of the vote. “This is amazing,” Hamilton told supporters at a Marriott ballroom in Overland Park. “We really did make history.” He added: “This election is a rebuke of unkindness and cruelty in Washington, D.C.” Marshall conceded Tuesday night from Wichita, telling supporters he had called Hamilton to congratulate him. “I don’t have any answers,” Marshall said. “I’ll just tell you it’s been the greatest honor of my life to serve the state of Kansas for ten years.” Hamilton’s campaign centered on lowering everyday costs, moderate

Masterson's bid to catch Holscher hinges on ballots he wanted scrapped | Opinion

As regular readers of my column know, I have quite the appetite for irony. And irony doesn’t get any more delicious than when someone tampers with voting rules to try to gain a partisan advantage, gets overruled in court, and then the original rule turns out to be their last, best hope for political survival. Enter Senate President Ty Masterson, stage right. As of this moment, Masterson, the Republican candidate for governor, trails his Democratic opponent Sen. Cindy Holscher by a paltry 5,578 votes out of more than 1.1 million cast. The only plausible scenario in which Masterson can overtake Holscher is if late-delivered mail votes break his way. The irony here is that if Masterson had had his way, those votes he now needs would have ended up in dumpsters behind election offices across the state, uncounted, unrecorded and unceremoniously forgotten. A little background: In 2017 the Legislature, by a bipartisan and near-unanimous vote, passed a bill allowing ballots to be counted if they’re postmarked by Election Day and delivered to the election office by the Friday after the election. At the time, it was seen mostly as an accommodation to voters in sparsely populated rural sections of Kansas,

Busy Wichita freeway ramp set to close temporarily

A busy Wichita freeway ramp is set to be closed much of the day on Friday, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation. As part of an ongoing project, the ramp from westbound Kellogg to southbound I-135 will be closed from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday, according to KDOT. The closure is for redecking work, the department said, which is part of an overall bridge replacement project. For the duration of the project, the inside lanes on I-135 (from Lincoln to Douglas) and Kellogg (Hillside to Topeka) will be closed intermittently. As a reminder to drivers, the department said all scheduled work is subject to weather conditions.
