BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Tuesday marks two years since the racist mass shooting at the Tops on Jefferson Avenue that left 10 people dead, and the Buffalo community paid its respects to those lost.

A ceremony held Tuesday outside Tops included various speakers and a tribute to the victims, during which the names of those who died were read aloud and a bell was tolled.

Earlier in the day Tuesday, the store unveiled its new 5/14 Honor Space, located on the corner of Jefferson and Landon Street. The space includes 10 granite honor bollards, one for each of the victims who lost their lives in the attack:

    • Roberta Drury, 32
    • Margus Morrison, 52
    • Andre Mackniel, 53
    • Aaron Salter, 55
    • Geraldine Talley, 62
    • Celestine Chaney, 65
    • Heyward Patterson, 67
    • Katherine Massey, 72
    • Pearl Young, 77
    • Ruth Whitfield, 86

The shooter, now 20-year-old Payton Gendron, is serving life in prison after pleading guilty to 15 state charges in November 2022. The Department of Justice is seeking the death penalty on federal charges.
