Chris Casey, the Savannah-born musical misfit, is putting his own southern spin on alternative rap music
This past week, I had the opportunity to sit down at Cool Beanz Espresso Bar and talk with the Savannah native and current Georgia Southern University film student to learn more about his journey so far as a music artist, where he finds inspiration, and how the local community has played a role in his career. GC Q: Who is Chris Casey? Casey: A rock/rap artist, I’d say. It’s funny, because with questions like that and “what genre do you work in,” I’ve always thought it was easy to answer, but then at the same time, there are a lot of different ways to say it… Sometimes I sing, but it’s mainly rap. GC Q: What led you down this stylistic path of fusing rock and rap, incorporating a lot of guitar and rock sounds? Casey: The specific thing was, when I was in high school, artists such as Jean Dawson, Dominic Fike, Paris Texas, Kenny Mason, those guys were really starting to blow up. Early on in high school, right when I started making music, I also followed Kanye [West], Tyler [the Creator], and Earl [Sweatshirt]. They were already doing unique stuff with their production, hearing that and the

The show, which opens at the Jepson Center, Telfair Museums in Savannah, Georgia in March 2026, focuses on a pair of revolutionary multidisciplinary residency programs known as the Ossabaw Island Project (OIP) and Genesis that ran on the island from 1961–1982 and their legacies in its examination of Ossabaw as a site for creative experimentation.

Beloved Bourbon Grill returns to Statesboro Mall after fire
When the Bourbon Grill reopens inside the Statesboro Mall on Saturday, February 7, 2026, it will mark the end of a 370-day absence that quietly reshaped one corner of the mall’s daily routine. The independently owned restaurant closed after a Feb. 2, 2025 fire damaged its grill and hood system, forcing a full evacuation of the mall and knocking the business offline indefinitely. While the fire was contained, the recovery was not quick. The rebuilding process proved challenging, in part because the hood system had to be custom built — a complication that stretched the reopening timeline to just over a year. That matters now because Bourbon Grill is not a seasonal pop-up or a new concept testing the waters. It is a more than 20-year fixture with a loyal, repeat customer base that treats the food court less like a browsing destination and more like a stop with a single purpose. Owner Van Lu , who took over the business from his father in 2012, said most customers don’t linger or comparison shop. “They come in, come straight to us, to get their food,” he said. Outside of major holidays, the restaurant functions as a destination for regular customers
