The second phase of the Marcus Garvey extension project is officially underway.

The $200 million project in Brownsville is creating more affordable and supportive housing and will bring a total of 287 new housing units to Chester Street and Livonia Avenue.

"What were going to have there are case managers, services, independent living, experiences, teach them how to live on their own, as well as health and welfare services," said Services for the Undeserved Perry Perlmutter.

Developers told News 12 there are two buildings, the first will be eight stories high, with 109 affordable units. 55 of those units will be supportive housing for formerly homeless people and families. There will be resources right on-site including life skills training, and health and wellness services.

The second building will have 178 affordable units. About 88 of those will be supportive housing for people reentering the community from incarceration.

Workforce development programs, family and relationship coaching and health and wellness services will be offered at the complex as well.

Last month, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $253 million would fund affordable housing in Brooklyn. Nearly $83 million of that is going toward the Chester Street development.
