The Chrysler Building is working to become more of a destination with a focus on upgrading the icon’s retail. The latest: WatchHouse Coffee, a luxe London coffee roaster, which opened its first New York location this spring at 660 Fifth Avenue, at 52nd Street, is adding another outpost inside the ground floor of the Chrysler Building in September, according to a spokesperson. “I see the [Chrysler] building as a Sleeping Beauty: It needs to be woken up and revitalized,” the real estate mogul, backing the building’s update, Aby Rosen told Page Six in 2019. At the time, he was in talks with Major Food Group, with whom he’d worked at his other properties, in the hopes of filling restaurant spaces to rival Chrysler’s Cloud Club, which closed in 1945 (the website suggests that plans are underway to reopen it) as well as food courts. According to a subsequent New York Post story from 2023, the building was said to be around 70 percent capacity, but several factors have allegedly stalled or thwarted lease negotiations. Spokespeople from MONA Retail Holdings and RFR, Rosen’s real estate company, which has recently made its own headlines, declined to comment about the building’s forthcoming food tenants.
