New York Yankees Reliever Unhappy With Demotion

One of the reasons that the New York Yankees are off to such a great start in the 2024 MLB season is the performance of their bullpen. New York’s relievers have been lights out, dominating games once the starting pitcher is lifted.

Thus far this season, the New York Yankees are leading the majors with 17 saves. Their bullpen has a collective ERA of 2.69, which is good for second place in the MLB. They have received contributions from everyone, which has led to some difficult decisions needing to be made.

With Nick Burdi returning from the injured list, the team had to make a move with their pitching staff. As a result, Ron Marinaccio was selected as the pitcher to be demoted back to Triple-A. It was a move that Yankees manager Aaron Boone shared that Marinaccio was unhappy with.

“He was upset,” Boone said of Marinaccio’s reaction to the news, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic . “Understandably.”

It is easy to see why Marinaccio was less than thrilled when he heard the news about his demotion. He has been pitching incredibly well this season, putting up career-best numbers across the board.

In nine appearances, Marcinaccio has thrown 12.2 innings, giving up only five hits and two earned runs, giving him a 1.42 ERA. The only blemish on his stat line this season is he has only 10 strikeouts compared to five walks, but he has worked around any trouble.

In March, Marinaccio signed a one-year, $739,900 deal with the New York Yankees to remain with the team. He has been shuttled back and forth between Triple-A and the majors, getting demoted three times already.

Since making his major league debut on April 9th, 2022, Marinaccio has been demoted seven times by the team. That cannot be easy to deal with, especially when you are performing as well as he is. The New York Yankees are happy with his development, but there is a business side to the decisions that he seems to always be on the wrong end of.

“Ron is in a really good place throwing the ball and obviously he’s performed well,” Boone said, per Kuty. “I feel like coming off the heels of last year, he’s worked really hard to put himself in a good position after struggling a little bit early in Spring Training. (He) finished Spring Training strong and has thrown the ball really well here to start the year.”
