A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Pulpit: Local Pastor Emerges as Stand-Up Comedian

He’s a rarity, that’s for sure. A guy who’s equally at ease while preaching from the Bible in a church or delivering a punch line at a comedy club. That’s right, State College’s Jonathan Weibel is both an ordained pastor and a professional stand-up comedian. Appropriately enough, he jokes about his curious combination of professions. “I fly a lot,” says the clergy comic, “and one of the first things someone says to you on a plane is, ‘What do you do for a living?’ If I want to talk to them, I tell them I’m a stand-up comedian. And if I’m tired and don’t want to talk to them, I’ll tell them I’m a Baptist evangelist.” Weibel has served in Christian ministry for nearly 40 years. The last 30 years have been spent in the Centre Region, where he’s planted three new churches and served as lead pastor, worship pastor or youth pastor at State College Alliance Church, Penns Valley Community Church and Centre Church. He first got my attention in work that was unrelated to stand-up: serving as the director of Front Yard Mission , a movement designed to bring genuine Christian love to neighborhoods. But then I heard

Korean Noodle Bar Closes in Downtown State College

A downtown State College restaurant specializing in customizable Korean noodle dishes has closed after about two years in business. Ramyun Studio, 208 E. Calder Way, permanently closed this week, according to a sign posted in the business' window. "We sincerely thank everyone who visited us and supported us throughout our journey," the sign reads. "Your support and kindness have meant so much to us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!" Owner Don Kim opened Ramyun Studio in October 2024 with a build-your-own concept for ramyun bowls, or instant noodle dishes similar to ramen, as well as kimchi and kimbap. The restaurant allowed diners to customize their ramyun with fresh ingredients, including broths and a variety of toppings. "By introducing Korean noodles, especially our own unique take on ramyun, we hope to provide the State College community with a taste of Korean tradition,” Kim said at the time. “State College is a diverse town with a vibrant mix of international students and locals, and we see an opportunity to create a space where everyone can come together and experience something new.” Ramyun Studio is the third food business on Calder Way to close in the last three months. Penn State School of Music to Host Two Family-Friendly Performances in November

Children and families will have two opportunities to experience live music and theater at Penn State this month through a free opera and an interactive concert inspired by Pennsylvania folklore. The university's School of Music will present "Dragon's Breath" at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Recital Hall in the Music Building on the University Park campus. Admission is free, and families can join lobby activities starting at 12:45 p.m. The second performance, "Critters, Creatures, and Tall Tales: A Hero's Journey," is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, also in the Recital Hall. Tickets are $16.50 for adults and $9 for students and are available through Penn State's Arts Ticket Center . "Dragon's Breath" is a roughly 50-minute opera composed by Evan Mack with libretto by Joshua McGuire. Directed by Professor Dawn Pierce, the production follows 11-year-old Alan as he learns to manage his anger, represented by an imaginary dragon. The opera combines music, humor and storytelling to explore emotional awareness, perseverance and self-confidence. Designed for students in second through fifth grades, the production features four vocal performers accompanied by a pianist. The performance is part of an outreach effort involving Penn State music education students, who have
