A matter of discipline
WEST WARWICK - Nearly halfway through the 2024 season, the West Warwick varsity baseball team appears to be a runaway train, but Richard Grenier isn’t celebrating anything just quite yet. Despite a perfect record through eight games, the head coach of the Wizards knows that there is plenty of...

Providence basketball coach Kim English has message for teams trying to lure his players away
Kim English said the quiet part out loud. His fiery social media post late Tuesday night felt like a fitting end to this latest round of transfer portal intrigue. That window was due to slam shut Wednesday, with no more basketball players eligible to enter before the 2024-25 season. Providence College’s men’s coach made...
Who are the top returning high school golfers in RI? Here's our 2024 watchlist
The Rhode Island high school golf season ends quicker than it starts. With state championships at the end of May, I know it just started getting warm, these standout golfers have four weeks to ready themselves for the state’s biggest stage. The tournament is tentatively slated for May 28 and 29 at Cranston Country Club.
Bikes Are Tools — People Are At The Center
The sun is on your face and the wind blows through your hair (under your helmet, of course) as you coast down one of Providence’s rolling hills. You feel alive; a strong sense of freedom rising in your chest. Biking is amazing!. As you near the bottom of the...

It's been a long road back for this Somerset native baseball and football star
SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The irony isn’t lost on Brandyn Durand. All the hits he dished out and took on the football field couldn't physically break him. It was a diving attempt for a fly ball in a baseball game that ultimately did the worst damage. The former three-sport...

Little league is off and running
Area little leagues celebrated their opening days on Saturday with the latest edition of their annual parades. Narragansett Little League marched into Sprague Park, North Kingstown Wickford Little League forged into Wilson Park and South Kingstown Little League paraded into Tuckertown Park. Among other festivities, each ceremony included a first pitch, national anthem and a collective “Play Ball” proclamation.
Rousseau's roundup: Busy week on the trail
I’ll be bouncing around the high school and professional beat this week. The Providence Bruins embark on a potential Calder Cup run this week in the second round of the AHL playoffs against Hartford on Wednesday. But I already checked out Triggs Memorial on Monday to watch two of the state’s best high school golfers in Max Jackson and Olivia Williams.
Beating the odds: Durfee baseball gathering momentum this spring
FALL RIVER — Since taking over at his alma mater at Durfee in 2020, Mike Martin is finally living his dream as a manager. Going back to his hay days as a high school baseball player in 1986-1990 and even as head coach, the Hilltopper Hall of Famer haven't had a fast start to the season like he's seen in 2024.
