Shenandoah council reviews proposals for garbage collection services
(Shenandoah) -- Shenandoah officials are exploring whether to have trash collection services implement automated side loader trucks. During its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Shenandoah City Council reviewed the bids for a contract of services for the city's solid waste collections, including a pair of proposals from Shenandoah Sanitation--the lone company to submit a proposal to the city. With the current contract expiring July 1st, the council ultimately tabled any action until June 11th to allow for further discussion. Alex Shackleton is a spokesperson for Waste Connections--the parent company of Shenandoah Sanitation. Shackleton says they presented two proposals that covered the same areas they are servicing currently, including residential, commercial, incinerator, and clean-up days, among others. However, one difference in the second option, Shackleton says, would be utilizing an automated side loader, or ASL, truck in the residential areas compared to the current manual rear load trucks.

The hearing is a state requirement when considering the purchase of actively farmed agricultural land, with the proposed project calling for drilling at least two wells into the aquifer near 190th Street and 355th Avenue. Joe Gutschenritter is one of three landowners notified by the city that portions of his farmland are being looked at for the project. Gutschenritter says one of his main concerns is how installing the wells would impact any irrigation of the active farmland around the area.
