14 crashes in 4 years prompt ODOT push to close Route 16 intersection
The Ohio Department of Transportation is petitioning to completely close but permit emergency access at River Road and State Road 16 in a bid to keep commuters safe . The intersection poses risks to drivers, particularly since there isn’t a merge lane for people turning onto Route 16 from River Road to enter traffic. ODOT officials believe closing the intersection could help prevent crashes. ODOT spokesperson Chas Cosgrave told The Advocate the intersection would have gated access, prohibiting commuters from turning onto River Road from the highway but allowing emergency personnel to do so. The agency was leaning towards that option, believing it to be the safest . The intersection is in Granville Township and 7 miles west of Newark. Licking County Commissioners will view the intersection at noon Oct. 30 before holding a public hearing at 1 p.m. inside the county administration building. They will listen to testimony and evidence from residents, ODOT officials and staff before deciding on the proposal. According to the petition, ODOT would remove pavement that allows drivers to merge onto the highway from River Road. It’s similar to the initial petition that pitched replacing that pavement with grass, but ODOT isn't yet sure what
