Feds get guilty plea in Dewitt County boat fraud case
A 58-year-old Farmer City man has pleaded guilty to swindling boat owners and banks out of about $4.7 million. Federal prosecutors said Jeffrey Gibbs used a DeWitt County boat dealership to take out bank loans on fake boats and false transactions, used forged signatures, sold boats on behalf of owners and then didn’t pay the owners or the taxes and title fees due to the state after collecting them.

Last month, Alyssa posted about the re-opening of two new bars in the former Blind Pig spaces. There were a lot of questions from the community about the name change and what the future of these spaces looked like, so I took some time to talk to the new owners, Kristen and Jim Enderle, to ask them some questions about their bars, Hound’s Rest and Hound’s Court. Champaign police honor 24-year-old as top officer
CHAMPAIGN — Last year, Champaign police Officer Maxwell Villanti conducted more than 270 traffic stops, made 12 DUI arrests and recovered 19 illegally possessed firearms. Those standout field results are only partly why Chief Timothy Tyler awarded Villanti the Champaign Police Department’s annual Officer of the Year award during a Wednesday ceremony celebrating National Police Week.
My go-to orders at six barbecue places around town
Huzzah, National Barbecue Day is tomorrow, May 16th. Thankfully, we have a lot of barbecue options in Champaign, Urbana, Savoy, and beyond. Our local barbecue joints offer different takes on American barbecue, each with special barbecue sauces and unique barbecue sides. I have two favorite spots in town for burnt ends, two favorites for a saucy barbecue pork sandwich, and two spots that pair yummy pie with barbecue.
Things are happening at Urbana’s forthcoming H Mart
After a long, long wait, things are finally happening at the spot for our very own H Mart grocery store. Even in the yesterday’s rain, there were construction vehicles and workers starting to renovate Urbana’s vacant Save A Lot location on Broadway Avenue into the popular Korean grocery store.
Champaign man gets 4 years in 2023 robbery at Illinois Terminal
URBANA — A Champaign man has been sentenced to four years in prison for robbing someone last year at the Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign. Champaign County Judge Matt Lee handed down the sentence April 30 to Lorenzo D. Taylor, 28, after he pleaded guilty to one count of robbery.
