Jasper County deputies identify 64-year-old man who died in house fire
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body that was found in a rural home that burned down in March as 64-year-old Dale Albert Schmidt. The state medical examiner made the identification with DNA samples on Wednesday, according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.
Des Moines man sentenced to life in prison for 2021 murder of Kalvyn Kline
What troubles Judge Jeffrey Farrell the most about the murder of Kalvyn Kline, he says, is that the motive for the crime is still unclear. Darren Diggs, 29, of Des Moines was convicted in March of first-degree murder in the death of Kline, who was found shot to death in his car in October 2021. Prosecutors believe Kline, 21, was meeting Diggs outside Diggs' apartment to purchase drugs, and presented evidence including video of a man resembling Diggs leaving the building just before the shooting and a handgun identified as the murder weapon found in Diggs' residence.

NORWALK, Iowa — A Norwalk woman faces charges related to an animal hoarding caseKCCI covered earlier this month. Police got a tip recently about a house full of animals not being properly cared for. Animal rescue workers found 57 dogs and puppies and three cats, according to officials. Some were trapped in kennels, others roamed free. There were also many dead dogs. The animals had fleas, skin rashes, and suffered from hair loss.
IA Athletes Caught In Sting Sue State; Agencies
Attorneys for more than two dozen Iowa and Iowa State athletes who were ensnared in a state gambling sting have filed a civil lawsuit seeking unspecified monetary damages from the state and its public safety and criminal investigation agencies for violating the athletes’ constitutional rights and damaging their reputations. The lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court in Des Moines and names as plaintiffs 17 athletes from Iowa, eight from Iowa State and one from Ellsworth Community College. The athletes are asking for punitive damages on top of compensatory damages and attorney fees.
