DES MOINES, Iowa — Police have released the name of a man whose body was found in the Des Moines River last week.

Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department said the deceased person has been identified as 40-year-old Chaiya Cavan, of Des Moines.

Second suspect arrested in 2021 shooting death of Tama County man

Cavan’s body was first spotted by a homeless man on the morning of April 24th, to the east of the 2nd Ave. bridge. The man notified police and the Metro STAR dive team recovered the body from the south bank of the river later that morning. Police said Cavan’s body had been snagged on a downed tree.

There wasn’t any indication that criminal action contributed to his death, according to Sgt. Parizek. The death investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police will share more information as it becomes available.
