Blount County Animal Center Dog of the Week: Hank
Hank was born with a very special quirk. Besides his soft black-and-white fur, puppy-dog eyes, and Frito toes, he had a tail that just wouldn’t stop wagging. “I can’t help that I’m so happy,” Hank said with his tail thumping on the ground. Mostly, Hank was able to live a normal life with his perpetually wagging tail, only there were a few things that proved difficult. Narrow hallways and doorways were challenging because Hank couldn’t get through without his waggy tail hitting both sides. Sometimes, if he was outside, his little tail would create waves in the wind that would blow squirrels along in the breeze. “Wheeee!” they’d cry. But sometimes Hank’s tail wagging was really useful, like when someone needed their floor swept. Sweet Hank and his waggy tail wanted a family to love. So one day, he closed his eyes tightly and made the biggest wish he’d ever made. “I just want someone to love,” he whispered. Hank started thinking about all the playing and snuggling he and his new person would do, and as he wished, his tail wagged faster and faster until he turned into a little Hankicopter, whirling right over to the Blount County Animal

He grew Ruby Tuesday. Now, his own Maryville restaurant group is expanding | Exclusive
After four decades in the corporate restaurant business, including as a Ruby Tuesday executive in its early years, Bart Fricks is betting on himself and on Maryville as he grows his own hospitality group. Fricks and his wife, Marti, had raised their kids and were nearing retirement when they decided there was more left on the table. The couple met in a small pizza place roughly 40 years ago, and the decision to build something of their own brought them back to the food that started it all. They formed Nostalgic Hospitality four years ago and in 2023 bought Jaboni's Pizzeria, a Maryville restaurant serving New York-style slices to a loyal base of regulars. This year, the couple expanded their Maryville portfolio by acquiring The Hop 50's Drive-In, which Fricks said will reopen in a few months, and Hot Rods 50's Diner in Alcoa. Running local restaurants has given Fricks a different perspective on the restaurant industry, one focused more on people and service than the scale and numbers that can drive corporate groups. "I could see the growth in Maryville," Fricks told Knox News. "It's really community oriented. Knoxville has pockets of community, but Maryville is one big community."

Maryville Alcoa Animal Rescue Center Dog of the Week: Freya
What happens when you mix a Tasmanian devil with a golden retriever, and sprinkle in extra cuddles? You get Freya! The cutest little rascal this side of East Tennessee. Freya used to star in Looney Tunes cartoons, alongside viewer favorites like Wile E. Coyote and Droopy. On screen, she’d chase her tail so fast she’d end up a tiny tornado, blasting off into another dimension! Sometimes she’d sit with boxes and boxes of Milkbones and eat treats until she had to slide across the floor rather than walk. In the cartoons, whenever she saw people, her eyes turned into big hearts, and little cupids flew around her head. She’d dash right up and give them a big puppy kiss. But Freya’s favorite gag was activating turbo mode, where flames shot out of her tail, and she ran in loops across the screen, her pink bubblegum tongue trailing behind. For Freya, life in cartoons was fun, but there were no humans for her to love on, and what Freya wanted more than anything was someone to love. So, one morning, much to the surprise of a family gathered around the TV for Saturday morning cartoons, Freya jumped out of the television.

See which Knoxville restaurants made the 2026 Michelin Guide American South
One of Knoxville’s most popular dining destinations has earned Michelin’s Bib Gourmand distinction, which recognizes restaurants serving “great food at a great value.” A Dopo , known for its sourdough pizza and previously recognized by USA TODAY as one of the best restaurants in the country , was given the distinction Oct. 21 during the Michelin Guide American South Awards in Nashville. Co-owner Brian Strutz had already tempered his expectations going into the awards ceremony, he told Knox News. It's a secretive process, he said, and owners have no idea what award they might receive going into the night. He thought, if anything, A Dopo would receive a recommended recognition. Strutz, alongside his wife Jessica, sat in the third row and waited for their restaurant's name to pop up on the screen. "We're at the top of the alphabet and expected to go first," Strutz said. But their name wasn't mentioned during the recommended section of the ceremony, and Strutz thought, "it's no problem." But when A Dopo received the Bib Gourmand distinction moments later, a wave of shock flooded over the couple. "It feels hard to believe," he said. "Honestly, I teared up walking up to the stage. ...

SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. – When her hometown faced devastation, Dolly Parton stepped up. In November 2016, wildfire spread across Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a community in Sevier County known for attracting tourists in droves due in part to its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Dollywood, Parton’s popular theme park in nearby Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The fires caused 14 deaths and left over 200 injured in Gatlinburg, a city of roughly 14,000 residents at the time.
