BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — As summer nears, more and more traffic cones are appearing on some major routes through the city as road construction crews prepare for a long season of projects.

There are various road construction projects ongoing and planned for the Bismarck area, including projects on South 7th Street, Century Avenue, the intersection of 4th Street and Divide Avenue and I-94’s Exit 161.

    South 7th Avenue:

    • North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) crews are prepping South 7th Street for repaving later this Spring
    • Drivers will notice lane restrictions on South 7th Street from Kirkwood Mall to East Bismarck Expressway
    • Throughout the summer, the repaving project will progress northward in different phases and eventually include work done on 9th Street

    4th Street/Divide Avenue:

    • City crews are currently replacing a water main near the intersection 4th Street and Divide Avenue, near the capitol building
    • The project is expected to wrap up next week (May 20-24) and the intersection will reopen
Multi-year reconstruction of I-94 Exit 161 begins in Bismarck

    I-94 Exit 161 :

    • NDDOT crews are currently building new overpass bridge over I-94 near Exit 161, which may delay drivers
    • The project is expected to take multiple years, finishing up in 2026

    Century Avenue:

    • Later this year, Century Avenue will be repaved from Tyler Parkway through 4th Street near Century High School

Gabe Schell, City Engineer for the City of Bismarck says with all the construction, the best thing people can do is slow down and keep an eye out for construction workers.

“The public just wants to get through it to get to their location, but that is also the location of someone’s job site,” expressed Schell. “So we want to make sure we provide a safe working environment for those people that are working there as well as the public that is navigating through those corridors.”

More information on road conditions/construction can be found on the NDDOT website’s ND Roads page .
