    1 killed, 6 injured in overnight Birmingham shooting

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after seven people were shot early Sunday morning.

    According to BPD, just after 2 a.m., officers were dispatched on multiple ShotSpotter alerts in the 700 and 800 block of 3rd Avenue West. Officers arrived to the 700 block of 3rd Avenue West and observed a Sedan that had crashed into a utility pole. Upon further investigation, officers found the driver of the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

    Additional officers arrived to the Shell gas station in the 800 block of 3rd Avenue West, when they found an adult male lying unresponsive in the parking lot, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. BFRS arrived and transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Dispatch updated officers that two additional adult males arrived at Princeton Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.

    Dispatch also updated officers that two additional males arrived at UAB Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. Around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning, officers learned that a seventh adult male gunshot victim arrived at Princeton Hospital by private vehicle.

    Preliminary investigation suggests shots were exchanged between two parties in the 800 block of 3rd Avenue West. Multiple vehicles, victims and one business were struck by gunfire. Operation Knight Rider officers arrived on the scene and assisted patrol by taking two adult males into custody for questioning. Anyone with information can call BPD at 205-254-1764.
