BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — 5th graders from every one of Binghamton’s Elementary schools were honored at a rotary meeting for their growth and leadership.

The Binghamton Noon Rotary Club commemorated one fifth grader from each of Binghamton’s Elementary schools as students of the year. To be selected, the students must be models of collaboration, show improvement in their behavior or academics, and be a beacon of positivity.

The students were joined by their families and teachers for a catered lunch. After lunch, each teacher spoke about the student they selected, and why they are so deserving.

Sophie Schaffer is a teacher at Ben Franklin, and says its important for students to be recognized for all of their hard work.

“It’s hard to kind of stop and thank kids for their hard work. So, being able to have an event like this where they’re truly just being recognized for being the great kids they are, I think its wonderful, and I think its really important for kids to remember how important they are and how awesome they are,” Schaffer said.

The students were given a brief introduction to what a rotary club is and does. Then, they were awarded with a student of the year certificate and a goodie bag of small gifts from local businesses.
