AHL action at its finest in downtown Binghamton

With 4,685 seats spoken for at a sold-out Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, the Binghamton Senators took a 3-2 lead over Bridgeport in the AHL’s Eastern Conference semifinals with a 3-0 win.

Josh Langfeld, Chris Bala and Chris Kelly came up with a goal apiece – the latter pair striking 2:27 apart in the third period – and Ray Emery made 26 saves. Langfeld’s goal halted an 0-for-23 power-play drought.

The B-Sens proceeded to eliminate Bridgeport in Game 6 with a 2-1 win in which Emery backstopped magnificently and Langfeld and Kelly provided the goals, It was the team’s first win in six games that season at Bridgeport.

In the series’ last two games, Emery stopped 60 of the Sound Tigers’ 61 shots.

“He’s a top young goalie,” said B-Sens coach John Paddock. “In the minor leagues, only that guy down the hall (Rick DiPietro) is as good a prospect as our guy. Emery was a huge difference.”

Young big man from U-E takes another title

Arthur Jones, a Union-Endicott High graduate who’d go on to play eight seasons as an NFL defensive lineman – Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013 - won New York State’s Junior (ages 17-18) Wrestling Championships’ 275-pound title by pinning Justin Tougas in the final.

The concluding pin against an opponent he’d defeated in the final of the state high school tournament that March was Jones' fifth in as many bouts that weekend at Broome Community College’s Ice Center. Jones is the older brother of UFC fighter Jon Jones and recent NFL standout Chandler Jones.
