The Buzz: Redding restaurant closes, another one opens. New hotel arrives in California
Five months after taking over the former Moonstone Bistro space on Redding’s west side, Honeymoon’s Kitchen has closed. In a note to customers that is on the front door, owners Kate and Joe Wood state that the closure is temporary as they rethink the business model. “We fell short and we are looking forward to pivoting into the establishment the West side of Redding desires. Ambiance, menu, service style all need a fresh start and we are going to take the necessary time to make that happen,” the message reads. Does that mean rebranding the restaurant and returning it to the upscale dining experience it replaced after Moonstone closed a year ago ? When Honeymoon’s Kitchen opened last April , Kate Wood said the atmosphere would be more casual than Moonstone offered. She called it Southern comfort food at “at an elevated level. Our goal is to still do barbecue, French Cajun cuisine and bring some high-end proteins in here,” she said at the time. I sent a phone text message to Kate Wood on Tuesday, Sept. 16, for more details. She replied that it’s been a difficult time but that she would very much like to do a story.

Fat Shasta Lake Rainbow Trout are on the Menu
The September feasting continues. Shasta is pumping out limits of fat, hard fighting, great eating Rainbow Trout. The past few days (and all summer) have provided steady trolling action for Rainbow Trout in the 2 to 5 pound class. The closer these fish get to fall spawning time, the more they eat, amd the fatter they get. In September, we historically see football size Trout. This fish have been feasting on shad all summer and there bellies are stuffed, making them look like footballs. This healthy diet of fish makes these Shasta Lake trout some of the best tasting table fair around.

'Get your food, come on over.' Cider bar opening in Redding bets on proximity to eateries
Alan Colwell and his girlfriend and business partner Hailey Friesner want to bring something to downtown Redding that they think is underserved. That’s why the North State natives are in the process of opening Logic Ciderbar & Alehouse in the former Cask & Cleaver (which has moved to Tehama Street) and before that Downtown Java space at 1534 Market St. They hope to open in December. Colwell, who graduated from Foothill High School in 2012, said the couple enjoys “mini vacations” where they travel around far Northern California and Oregon taking in the local brewery scene. “Everywhere we go we would try to find a brewery and try to make a stop there. Her big thing is always do they have cider?” Colwell said of Friesner. Colwell said many of the breweries they would go to would have great beers on tap but not a huge variety of ciders. But earlier this year, they visited the North Coast and went to The Local Cider Bar in Arcata. The visit made an impression, so much so they walked away with the ambition of opening something similar in Redding. “They had, I think, geez, 12 ciders on tap and like four beers,”

Expand your home chef repertoire with foods from Redding ethnic grocery stores
Hankering for spicy chicken curry from India, sweet buñuelos from Mexico, jolof rice from West Africa, pancit from the Philippines, or other traditional meals that hail from around the world? The authentic ingredients for these dishes might originate in other countries. But more Redding markets are catering to local people who want to make these and other dishes with an ethnic flair. There are two markets in Redding on Bechelli Lane that carry a variety of ingredients used in Indian cooking. India Mart, an Indian grocery, opened earlier this summer at 3032 Bechelli Lane, where Pluto's store used to be. The market, which is open seven days a week, moved from a smaller spot off Hartnell Avenue to their expanded location. Inside the current store, shoppers will find everything from 50 pound bags of onions, Wagh Bakri tea, chana dal dried beans and a wide variety of herbs and spices, including karela, or bitter gourd, and jamun, or black plum, powders. A second Indian grocery, Punjabi Indian Food, also operates further north on Bechelli Lane south of Cypress Avenue, across the street from Country Bowl. The casual restaurant's food truck cooks dishes including tikka, curry, roti and biryani, plus samosas,
