Huckleberry’s brings Southern-style comfort food to Redding
Stacked chicken and waffles. Fried green tomatoes. Cajun eggs Benedict. Bayou hash browns. Mardi Gras beignets. Those are some of the signature dishes at the new Huckleberry’s restaurant in Redding, which opened in December at the former IHOP pancake house. With a name like Huckleberry’s, the tangy fruit stands out as an ingredient for the diner’s muffins and as a topping for waffles, crepes and French Quarter french toast. The Southern-inspired menu also features N’Awlins sandwiches that include shrimp or catfish po’ boys. There’s chicken fried steak, chicken gumbo and another Southern staple, fried okra. Huckleberry’s joins the hub of Hilltop Drive eateries close to Interstate 5 that offer breakfast and lunch fare such as Black Bear Diner, Denny’s and Country Kitchen. Other close-by spots are Lumberjacks, The Brunch House and Jeff’s California Cattle Co. farther down Cypress Avenue. Huckleberry’s evokes a swampy, Bayou theme as soon as you pass through the doors. A custom-made weeping willow tree stands by the register as a replica alligator nicknamed Mad Dog is suspended in his cage above. “Somebody walks in, they see the tree and they see the gator right there,” general manager Kash Deol said. Three wall murals add to the

That's Amore. Nello’s Place to host hundreds of Valentine’s Day diners
Romance is in the air at Nello’s Place in Redding. Redding’s renowned Italian dining spot is gearing up for another busy Valentine’s Day this Saturday, Feb. 14. Jim Dad, who owns Nello’s with his wife, Rosa, had to stop taking reservations for the special night when the booking list swelled to 300. Reservations filled fast, within about three weeks. “That’s probably the quickest we’ve ever sold,” Dad said. “You open those doors up and (customers) just start coming in here," the long-time restaurateur said; "We’ll have a 35-table rotation to do 300 people.” Couples who couldn’t snag a Saturday slot were being squeezed in for Friday, which also was selling out. Nello’s popularity on Cupid’s day shouldn’t be a surprise considering it once again was voted the top romantic restaurant in the latest Best of North State Community’s Choice Awards. The Bechelli Lane location also took three other best-of honors for premier dining experience, fine dining and best Italian food in 2025. “I always tell them, thank you very much,” Dad said. Setting the mood at Nello's Place Don’t be surprised if there’s already a line of customers when the doors open at 5 p.m., especially on the weekends. The

Hidden speakeasy opens inside this downtown Redding restaurant
Amin Wahbi realized a dream when he relocated his Anthony’s Mediterranean Cuisine to downtown Redding nearly two years ago to the Cascade Square building near the corner of California and Placer streets. Now the restaurant has opened a new chapter with The Speakeasy. Wahbi spent about six months converting a backroom in the restaurant to a classic throwback to Prohibition times when patrons would hang out at a top-secret location and imbibe. Of course, alcohol is no longer illegal, but the nostalgia lives on. The Speakeasy inside Anthony’s is behind a door that from the restaurant looks like a bookshelf on a back wall. “This is the real speakeasy. No one has a hidden a door like that,” Wahbi said. Inside is a dimly lit bar with a few tables. The spot is small by design because Wahbi said he wanted a sort of intimate ambience. No membership is required, rather customers can text 530-201-1801 to reserve a seat. The Speakeasy is open 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. And bourbon is a big part of the experience. Wahbi said he has about 900 different types. “We have been building the inventory for almost two years. This is
