Crotteau, Murfin to make state cross country debut for Wolverines

VIRGINIA—Two Rock Ridge sophomores are set to make their state cross country debut today at the Class AA State Championships held at the Majestic Oaks Golf Club in Ham Lake. On the boys side, Bryce Crotteau will represent the Wolverines after taking seventh at sections and claiming the third individual qualifying spot. For the girls, Mylah Murfin earned a state berth, taking ninth and claiming the sixth and final individual qualifying spot. For Crotteau, earning a trip to state was a bit of a shock for the sophomore considering where he was coming into the season. “I didn’t have as much training as I wanted,” Crotteau said. “I didn’t have a good plan this summer and really the first few meets of the season didn’t go well at all.” Eventually, Crotteau managed to turn things on and found a path that would lead him to state. “I started following a plan and I guess it worked. My race strategy changed a bit. You see the same people at most meets so I started chasing one person. Then I’d pass them and then find another person to chase. Keep doing that and eventually you’re making it to state.” Wolverines coach Chris

Knights manage upset in football state tournament

Despite being given a six seed in the Class AAAAAA State Football Tournament, St. Michael-Albertville smoked Woodbury in the first round 28-0 on Oct. 30. Knights quarterback Lucas Bryan was excellent in the round of 32 game. Bryan got things started with a 17-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. The Knight defense that got them through the start of a difficult season showed up on their end. Forcing stop after stop, the Knights took control of the game in the second quarter. Bryan punched in a one-yard touchdown on the ground and the team followed it up later in the quarter with a 66-yard explosive rush from Wyatt Mosher to the end zone. Bryan struck a third time in the third quarter on a 29-yard score, and the Knights went up 28-0. The Royals offense couldn't get anything going with the Knights winning every level. The Knights advance to the round of 16 where they'll play two seed Rosemount. The Irish are 6-3 on the year as the Knights improve to 4-5. The Irish beat Osseo 69-0 to advance to this round. The Knights will head to Rosemount Friday, Nov. 6, for the second-round matchup, starting at 7 p.m.

Memorial golf tournament raises $8,000 for Open Doors for Youth

Sept. 12 was a perfect day for golf and a meaningful day to honor the memory of Noelle M. Anderson at the 27th annual Noelle M. Anderson Memorial Golf Tournament. More than 100 golfers gathered at Elk River Golf Course, raising $8,000 for Open Doors for Youth, this year’s beneficiary. Elliott and Chris Anderson presented the donation to Cindy Ley, executive director of Open Doors for Youth, which operates a drop-in center for youth ages 16-24 experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The organization recently opened The Next Door, a transitional housing program that provides a safe, supportive home for youth ages 18-24. In past years, tournament proceeds often funded scholarships for local high school students. Last year, the Andersons shifted to directing all funds raised to Open Doors for Youth to support the essential resources and services it provides to local youth. “We are thrilled that these funds can go directly to youth in need in our community,” Chris Anderson said.

Girls soccer: Mounds View turns back Ponies in state quarterfinals

SPRING LAKE PARK — After outlasting Stillwater for the conference title, Mounds View also denied the Ponies a trip to U.S. Bank Stadium after prevailing with a 2-1 victory in the Class AAA state quarterfinals on Thursday, Oct. 29 at Spring Lake Park High School. The fifth-seeded Mustangs (17-2-1) jumped out to a two-goal lead early in the second half and withstood strong pressure from Stillwater to earn a spot in the semifinals. Mounds View moved on to face top-seeded Lakeville North (15-1-2) in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 7, with the winner to meet either third-seeded Eagan (14-2-3) or seventh-seeded Duluth East (15-4-1) in the finals on Saturday morning. The reigning state champion Ponies, who graduated 17 seniors from that squad, finished the season with a 15-3-2 record. “If you had asked me before the season we would go 15-3-2, I’d take that in a heartbeat,” Ponies coach Mike Huber said. “But once you get to that point where you could have or should have won, it stings a little more.” Stillwater held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, but were unable to dig out of a 2-0 deficit. With just four players on the field from last

Crimson boys soccer loses in heartbreaker at state

As the favored seed in the state tournament quarterfinals, Maple Grove boys soccer had a tough task on its hand. Familiar foe St. Paul Central was the first-round opponent on Oct. 29. The two teams had met in the season, and the Crimson survived a 5-3 slugfest. This time, the Minutemen won and ended the Crimson's season in penalty kicks. The first half started exactly how the Crimson drew it up. In the first 10 minutes, star senior midfielder Parker Carlson managed to control a bouncing ball on the Minutemen side of the field. Carlson made a couple moves and fired a through pass between a flurry of Minutemen defenders. Fellow senior and captain Bodi Nelson took the pass and rifled a perfect left footed shot past the goalkeeper into the back of the net. The Crimson now played with the lead, but both teams would continue to find offensive opportunities. The Minutemen had a few shots or drive in close to the goal that goalkeeper Raidyn Bailey stopped. The best play of the game from Bailey came near the end of the first half. Leading 1-0, a cross came into the box and a header directed at the ground

Minnesota and St. Thomas start a new rivalry. Proximity doesn't mean they'll see each other often

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The novelty of the first men's basketball matchup in 92 years between Minnesota and St. Thomas, two schools a mere 3 miles apart along the winding Mississippi River, will give the Gophers a rare attendance boost during the first week of the season. That doesn't mean this game will become a regular occurrence. Extra ticket sales don't factor into NCAA Tournament selection criteria. “If you take the name off the jersey or that they were local, there’s no upside to us playing them,” Minnesota coach Niko Medved said. The Gophers were expecting around 10,000 fans, Medved said, for the game on Friday night. They only topped that mark last season twice, against rival Wisconsin and Nebraska, another nearby Big Ten foe. The 14,000-seat arena — now officially called The Barn by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota — will be livelier than it's been for any nonconference game in years. St. Thomas, in its sixth year as a Division I program after making an unprecedented jump directly from Division III, will undoubtedly bring its best for the biggest crowd it'll likely play in front of all season. But despite the fact the Tommies won 48 games

Gophers, Tommies begin 2026-27 basketball seasons

The college basketball season begins tonight, and it doesn't look promising for Minnesota's teams. Gophers men: A Columbus Dispatch preseason media poll has Minnesota finishing 13th in the 18-team Big Ten conference. Their best player, Cade Tyson, is still awaiting a court decision on a class-action lawsuit that will determine if he's eligible to play. If he can play, ESPN says the Gophers are a " a dangerous bubble team ." Gophers women: Coming off last year's Sweet 16 appearance, Minnesota looked like it would contend for a Big Ten title this season. Preseason polls put the Gophers among the nation's top 20 teams. Yes, but: That was before they lost star guard Tori McKinney to a season-ending knee injury . St. Thomas men: This will be the Tommies' second year of eligibility for March Madness. They're picked to finish a close second in the Summit League, but if they can win the conference they would get an automatic bid. The intrigue: For the first time in the Division I era, the Gophers and Tommies will play

Girls cross-country: Ponies earn repeat trip to state

ST. PAUL — It was expected to be a three-team battle for two spots in the state meet and the Stillwater girls cross-country team locked up another trip to state after prevailing in the Section 4AAA Meet on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the Highland 9-Hole Golf Course. The Ponies made up some ground late and posted a 51-57 victory over runner-up St. Paul Highland Park while White Bear Lake followed in third place with 71 points, comfortably ahead of fourth-place Two Rivers (117). Stillwater was able to do that despite competing without one of its top runners in sophomore Aubrey Nowak, who was a late scratch due to injury. There was also some uncertainty prior to the race when coaches and officials made the decision to move up the start time due to anticipated severe weather. “It worked out perfectly,” Ponies coach Rob Greer said. “We started to get pelted with rain on our way to the bus.” The hard work had been completed with Stillwater placing four runners in the top 10, though it remained tight as Highland Park and White Bear Lake each put its fifth runner across before Stillwater’s final scorer. Josie Miller of Two Rivers was
