Plea hearing slated for Thursday PM in Belgrade shooting case

(Belgrade MN-) A plea hearing takes place Thursday (2) for a Belgrade man charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder and 2nd Degree Assault. On February 21st, 44-year-old James Basore allegedly shot and wounded a man who was sitting in a car in Basore's driveway with a teenaged girl, then Basore called 911 and surrendered to police. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the right shoulder, his right arm, finger, and nose. Basore had earlier made statements that he thought people were "messing with his house" and knew the person he allegedly shot. Before the shooting, the victim told police he had knocked on Basore's door to ask for a cigarette. He is being held in the Stearns County Jail on 1 million dollars unconditional bail. If no plea agreement is reached, a jury trial is slated to begin November 16th.

COLD SPRING, Minn. — Albany's senior quarterback Cohen Habben had not taken consistent offensive snaps since getting sidelined in an early-season loss to Pierz. Junior Emmett Rushmeyer stepped up significantly all season long in his absence, but with his thumb hurting and the team in desperate need of an offensive spark, the switch was made back to Habben. "It was unexpected, [but] I was ready," Habben said. "I love Emmett; he's a great quarterback and he had a couple of huge deflections [on defense]." Before the third quarter could even end, Habben led three unanswered scoring drives to get the Huskies back into the game and completed the comeback for a 42-35 win over New London-Spicer in the Section 6AAA Championship. Rocori Student Injured in Accident

(Cold Spring, MN) — A Rocori High School soccer standout remains hospitalized with serious injuries following a crash in central Minnesota. Junior midfielder Juan Cortez was hurt early Sunday morning when the car he was riding in ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle east of Rice. The impact threw Cortez from the car. Rocori coach Chris Stavros says teammates, other schools and the community have rallied around the teenager and his family. A fundraiser raised more than 21-thousand dollars in less than 24 hours to help cover travel, food and other expenses while Cortez receives treatment.

Patriots punch ticket to state for third straight year

Upsala/Swanville Area traveled to the Fargodome Nov. 6 to take on Benson in the Section 5A Championship. The Patriots defeated Benson 54-7 in week two of the regular season. Upsala/Swanville was looking for the same result to remain undefeated and punch its ticket to the state tournament for the third year in a row. The Patriots were able to do just that as they defeated Benson 36-12 to earn a trip to the state tournament. Upsala/Swanville jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. Benson quickly cut the lead to 8-6 before the Patriots extended their advantage to 22-6 by halftime. Benson tried to make a comeback in the second half, cutting the Patriots' lead to 22-12. However, Upsala/Swanville held on to win 36-12, earning its third straight section championship and state tournament appearance. The Patriots will play Nov. 13, with the location and opponent still to be determined.
