BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Humane Society of the United States has named a Baton Rouge man a finalist for a community hero award for his efforts in advancing access to pet resources in underserved communities.

Jamal Hughes is one of three finalists who were selected nationwide for the More Than a Pet Community Hero Award , according to a news release.

“When I see people’s faces when I deliver the food and being thanked for helping, it gives me a good feeling,” said Hughes. “Seeing how grateful people are when I bless them with bags of pet food and treats — they are so happy.”

Hughes works with the Companion Animal Alliance in Baton Rouge to make sure people in the community “have what they want and need for their beloved pets.” He also volunteers at pet food pantries, drops off pet supplies to neighbors and advocates for fair animal-friendly policies at city council meetings, according to a release.

Paula Shaw, program director for Companion Animal Alliance, nominated Hughes for the More Than a Pet Community Hero Award. Shaw explained why Hughes deserved the nomination.

“Jamal is never, ever afraid to do the heavy lifting for the people and pets of his community,” said Shaw. “Most days you will find him driving around the neighborhood dropping off food or cat litter, driving pets to veterinary appointments, or advocating for equitable policies. Everyone deserves to experience the unconditional love that a pet offers, and Jamal is making sure this happens in his community.”
