LETTER: ‘Vote, and vote yes’ – 9th grade student adds voice to school budget debate
As a 9th grader at Harwood Union High School, I am concerned about the budget. Part of what's missing from this conversation is the student voice, and I'd like to contribute mine, and talk about how this problem, from my perspective, will affect our school community not only now, but in the future.
Jane Kitchel announces retirement after nearly 20 years in Vermont Senate
The person who’s universally regarded as the most influential legislator in Montpelier announced Friday that she won’t seek reelection this fall. Caledonia County Sen. Jane Kitchel has helmed budget deliberations in the Legislature for nearly two decades. And as the Democratic chair of her chamber’s appropriations committee, she’s played an outsize role in determining which line items make it into the state budget and which ones do not.
Lawmakers pass flood disclosure requirements for home sellers, landlords
Vermont now joins a growing list of states that mandate flood risk disclosure for real estate transactions, as climate change fuels more extreme weather. Read the story on VTDigger here: Lawmakers pass flood disclosure requirements for home sellers, landlords.
LETTER: Budget uncertainty could spark ‘an exodus of qualified early and mid-career teachers’
My name is Larry Gravelle and I’m a 20-year veteran high school English teacher who is just finishing his first year at Harwood Union High School. I live in Moretown with my wife, who is a math and science teacher at HUHS, and we’re raising our eight-year-old son in this incredible community- a community that drew us from Colorado due in part to its wonderful elementary school, small class sizes (it matters!) and overall support for public education. We are homeowners facing the same tax increases as our friends and neighbors. I am writing this letter to urge those in our community who are on the fence to vote yes on this current budget. If our community fails to pass this budget, we face losing many more student-facing positions and could, I fear, jeopardize the sustainability of our district.

Road Work | May 20-24
Road Work is compiled from reports from the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTRANS), Waterbury Public Works, and other local highway departments. Work is under way now on Guptil Road on Bridge 4 (actually the third bridge from Rt. 100 heading to Waterbury Center) just south of the Kneeland Flats Road intersection. The town road crew asks motorists to please slow down traveling through the narrow work zone. The road will remain open during the rehab project which is expected to take until mid-July to be completed.
Smugglers Notch road reopens with new truck-deterrent barriers
Scenic Route 108 — also known as the Notch — is now open for the 2024 season. And as is tradition, the Agency of Transportation is reminding motorists that vehicles over 40 feet will not fit on the winding roadway, which is notorious for snaring tractor-trailers. Earlier this...
LETTER: Base your ‘no’ vote to the school budget on facts
My name is Frank Provato, and I have been a resident of Waterbury Center for 24 years. You are being asked to vote again on a new school budget proposal. Please do not base your decision on wanting to “just get this over with.” And please do not base your decision on the unsubstantiated claims by school administration and staff that further budget reductions will somehow harm the future prospects of our students. They have put forth no objective evidence to support that claim.

WATERBURY, Vt. — Community members in Waterbury are in the process of revamping an alleyway to become an attractive public gathering spot. However, the project has one month left to raise $10,000 in donations in order to receive a grant from the state's Better Places Program. Up until a...
LETTER: Vote ‘yes’ but ask to keep World Language program
I am writing in support of the Elementary World Language Program in the Harwood Unified Union School District. I don’t live in the HUUSD, so I am not able to vote on the upcoming budget, but I have worked in this community for 8 years. As someone who works...
