BARNSTABLE — A 24-year-old Barnstable man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Barnstable District Court to charges that he stabbed and critically injured his 62-year-old father the day before at their Centerville home.

Flanked by police, Ygor Barboza, 24, arrived at the courthouse Wednesday morning.

He was arraigned on charges of armed assault to murder, assault and battery on a person over 60 and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60. He was ordered by Judge Sylvia Gomes to undergo 20 days of observation at Bridgewater State Hospital .

During the arraignment, Barboza was described by his family and Hilary Novak, a court-appointed forensic psychologist, as a loving son who has a history of mental illness, including bipolar, schizophrenia and episodic psychosis. Court records show he has no prior criminal record.

Barboza's father, who suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack at their Old Stage Road home, was flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for treatment.

Barboza was taken to Cape Cod Hospital and treated for minor injuries after being apprehended by police.

    Several 911 calls

Around 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Barnstable police received several 911 calls about a man chasing another man with a knife near Old Stage Road and Thoreau Drive, according to a police report. Callers reported that one of the men appeared to have blood on his shirt, police said.

Police said the man, later identified as Barboza's father, had six to 10 stab wounds.

Police said Barboza was not initially found at the scene, but came out of his house moments later holding a large kitchen knife covered in blood. Barboza began spinning in circles, according to the police report, and was drooling and closing his eyes.

After repeated calls for Barboza to drop the knife and surrender, police said they fired a shotgun with less-than-lethal bean bag rounds and used a police dog to bring him to bay.

On top of the 20-day observation period, Gomes ordered him held without bail for a 120-day period.

Police said they are continuing to investigate.
