German students detail 'amazing' three weeks at Zeeland Public Schools
A new reciprocal exchange program is providing dozens of students an opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture through Zeeland Public Schools . A group of 23 students from the Michelsenschule in Hildesheim, Germany, visited Zeeland for three weeks in October, living with local families and attending Zeeland East High School. In May, local high schoolers will travel to Germany and stay with students who visited this fall in Hildesheim. During their stay, students have attended school, learned about the city's history at the Dekker Huis Museum, visited elementary and middle schools for cultural presentations for German-American Day, and took a trip to Holland to see Hope College. They've also taken part in various local cultural experiences, including their first homecoming and the Pumpkinfest Parade. The students were recognized during a meeting of the ZPS Board of Education on Oct. 19, during which they each received a certificate and several spoke on their experiences in the United States. Pierce Velderman, who teaches German and English at ZPS, began by thanking administrators for making the exchange possible. "While here, these students have been members of (local) families, sharing dinners, routines and traditions," he said. "That is the heart of this program.
