Maine shooter Olivia Babin changed clothes and disposed of gun before calling 911 as boyfriend lay dying: DA

A Maine woman accused of shooting her boyfriend in the forehead disposed of the firearm and changed clothes while he lay dying in a bloody heap on the floor before calling 911, according to prosecutors.

Olivia Babin, 20, spent almost 30 minutes after the shooting attempting to cover her tracks instead of getting help for 24-year-old Daniel Ford-Coates, according to Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Ackerman.

Those precious moments might have saved her boyfriend’s life. A police source confirmed to the Post Ford-Coates was still alive when first responders arrived on the scene and he wasn’t pronounced dead until he reached an area hospital.

Babin has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the April 2 shooting in Bangor, an apparent prank which went wrong.

According to charging documents, Babin held the gun to Ford-Coates’ forehead and said “Oh don’t think I will?” before pulling the trigger and firing the single fatal shot.

The shooting was witnessed by at least two other people, authorities claim.

In a Nest surveillance video exclusively obtained by The Post last week the gunshot can be clearly heard, followed by a woman’s voice screaming “oh, f—.”

The clearly panicked woman — presumed to be Babin — repeatedly screams, “you’re not dead, you’re not dead,” at least seven times.

The video is part of the evidence collected against Babin by the Bangor Police Department. Prosecutors charge she also threw the 9mm handgun in the nearby Kenduskeag River before making the 911 call.

During her initial police interview, Babin allegedly told officers another friend had argued with Ford-Coates about a woman. She claimed she left the room during the argument. Later, she said, she heard a loud bang and witnessed the friend fleeing the scene.

But the friend told cops a different story, alleging it was Babin who retrieved Ford-Coates’ 9mm handgun from his bedroom.

The shooting has shocked the small city of Bangor. Babin, who played soccer and was a member of the swim team at Bangor High School, was an average student who had already made a string of poor decisions before her 2021 graduation, according to sources.

“She never really came to class,” a classmate tells The Post. “She definitely hung out with the wrong crowd for sure. We all assumed she’d go to prison for drugs someday.”

Babin is being held on $100,000 bond. She has not formally entered a plea, and it’s unclear if she has an attorney authorized to speak on her behalf.

Her next court date is on June 10.
