Pet of the week: Bubba, the smart rat
Let’s hope Bubba meets the person or fur-mily of his dreams, since Thursday is Mouse and Rat Day. Yes, that sounds like a “Looney Tunes” cartoon, but Bubba is a white/tan point standard rat currently at Lowell Humane Society. Domestic rats are known for their intelligence and curiosity, and since these are social creatures, Bubba will need a buddy. This little guy came from a hoarding situation, so he’s a little nervous, but will come along to being “more social and hand friendly,” with patience and care. The Humane Society advises that: “rats need a cage with a minimum of 2.5 cubic feet, with wire siding, ramps, and platforms they can climb on, with enough room for their food, water, toys, and hiding spots. Rats are very intelligent creatures and need toys, puzzles, tunnels, and other enrichment to keep them mentally stimulated.”

On Oct. 17, a standing-room only crowd gathered at Natick Historical Society for the presentation of a new online exhibit about the mural John Eliot Speaks to the Natick Indians, located in Natick’s Post Office at 15 Common St. Painted by local artist Hollis Holbrook in 1937, the mural depicts the forced removal of the Indigenous inhabitants of Natick in 1675 during Metacom’s Rebellion, also known as King Philip’s War. They spent the winter on Deer Island in the Boston Harbor, where nearly half perished from starvation, disease, and exposure.

12 Old-School Massachusetts Meat Markets Where Quality And Tradition Still Come First
Julia Child’s initials are pressed into a sidewalk outside a butcher shop, right next to the words Bon Appétit. I love that a TV cooking legend left her mark at a meat counter instead of a fancy restaurant. That detail sent me looking for more old-school butchers in...
