AUSTIN (KXAN) — A quick recap of April found the month with slightly warmer temperatures vs. the average. But it was a better month for rain than the previous two.

April was the second of the first four months (January the other) to have above-normal rain with 3.48″ in the bucket. The highest calendar day rain total was 1.54″ on the 9th. There were a few thunderstorms that day with reports of hail in the area.

April was a good month for rain

In all, nine days in the month measured rain of .01″ or higher.

Temperatures were not so bad in April. There were no highs that reached 90°. The highest was 89° reached on two occasions, the 4th and the 29th. Interestingly enough, the lowest low was recorded on the 4th, too. The cool start to this day ended up being the warmest of the month thanks to sunshine and a southeast wind.

April temps were not so hot and not so cold

Aprils in Austin continue to get warmer, leading to a change of 2.7°F since 1970.

The numbers for the month didn’t stand out in terms of standing as April 2024 goes down as tied for the 14th warmest while being the 49th wettest.

Looking ahead, the 31-day outlook (May) is showing temperatures to be warmer than normal. The normal high is 86.9° with a normal minimum of 66.8°. May is the 5th warmest month of the year with an average temperature of 76.8°. This is the 30-year average of data from 1991 to 2020.

May is the wettest month of the year with an average rainfall of 5.04″. The precipitation forecast:

Normal would be fine. More than normal would be better.
