(AP) — Authorities say they have identified a man who was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies after he sped toward them in a vehicle while the officers were serving a drug-related search warrant in a Memphis neighborhood Friday. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says the man who died in the incident was 30-year-old James Q. Hampton. Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner said deputies were serving the high-risk drug warrant that afternoon when a man who was waiting in a vehicle drove toward a SWAT team at high speed in the Orange Mound neighborhood.  Deputies opened fire, killing the driver, Bonner said. No deputies were hurt.

In a concerning development, former Elkhart Police Chief Laura Koch was apprehended on Monday on suspicion of Operating While Intoxicated, according to authorities. Reports indicate that an Indiana State trooper pulled Koch over on County Road 17 after observing her vehicle crossing the center line. Upon investigation, an open container of alcohol was allegedly discovered inside her car, and Koch purportedly failed field sobriety tests administered at the scene.

CHICAGO (AP) — The singer R. Kelly was correctly sentenced to 20 years in prison on child sex convictions in Chicago, a federal appeals court ruled Friday.  Jurors in 2022 convicted the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, on three charges of producing child sexual abuse images and three charges of enticement of minors for sex.  In his appeal, Kelly argued that Illinois’ former and shorter statute of limitations on child sex crime prosecutions should have applied to his Chicago case rather than current law permitting charges while an accuser is still alive.  He also argued that charges involving one accuser should have been tried separately from the charges tied to three other accusers due to video evidence that became a focal point of the Chicago trial.

(AP) — Charlotte announced the hiring of Tomekia Reed as women’s basketball coach on Thursday after she helped Jackson State win five consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference championships during a highly successful six-year tenure with the Tigers. Reed was named the SWAC’s top coach four times from 2020-24 along with being a three-time national coach of the year for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) at JSU, which won consecutive SWAC Tournament titles in 2021 and ’22 among three overall. Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gerber called Reed one of college basketball’s most talented young coaches in a post on the school’s athletics web site and added, “Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence, both on and off the court.” Reed will be introduced by the first-year American Athletic Conference school on Monday. Reed is 125-54 lifetime as a head coach including 95-10 in conference play, with three consecutive seasons of 20-plus wins. She began as JSU’s recruiting coordinator in 2006 and held the same job at Louisiana. Reed has also worked at Southern Mississippi, Louisiana Tech and New Orleans after beginning her head coaching career at Hinds (Mississippi) Community College, her alma mater.
