DENVER ( KDVR ) — The owner of a moving company based in Aurora was sentenced to serve six years in the Department of Corrections after a jury convicted him in February of two counts of theft.

Huseyn Nemat-Zoda, 40, was the owner of H&M Relocation Service s when the company allegedly failed to deliver about $151,000 worth of customers’ property. Prosecutors said Nemat-Zoda preyed on people who were moving cross-country and didn’t have the time or leverage available to fight back.

Nemat-Zoda originally pleaded not guilty on Jan. 11, and faced trial from Feb. 20-23, according to court records.

The two theft charges stem from June 2021 when Nemat-Zoda was hired to relocate their possessions from Greeley to another state. Their items never arrived, according to court records, and Nemat-Zoda eventually stopped responding to the victims’ calls.

The victims’ belongings were located by authorities in a self-storage business in Englewood after the victims filed a police report with the Greeley Police Department.

“He knew what he was doing the whole time and nothing stopped him,” Weld County Deputy District Attorney Daniel Skelton said during the sentencing hearing on May 9, according to the agency. “People who believed in the good of others were then at his mercy as he took their money and strung them along. He told them promise after promise that he never intended to keep. He took advantage of desperate, trusting people to enrich himself.”

The victims also spoke at the sentencing hearing according to the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.

“Every week we would get our hopes up that our belongings would show up at our new house, but they never did,” one victim reportedly said. “It was a financial and emotional nightmare. He has hurt us in a way that has broke us.”

Owner is also facing felony theft charge in Denver

Nemat-Zoda is also facing one count of felony theft in Denver District Court for using allegedly his company to steal from another Colorado resident moving out of state. The victim said she contracted with H&M Relocation Services in June 2022 and agreed to pay about $3,383 to Nemat-Zoda in three installments.

However, she alleges that when Nemat-Zoda arrived to move, he first said she had not disclosed several items during the estimate process, and that payment was then due in full because the truck was packed. The victim alleges that she went to get funds to pay Nemat-Zoda, and when she returned, he was demanding thousands more in payment.

That victim is alleging her items were held for about three months, even allegedly threatening to donate the items to charity, as the moving company owner demanded additional payment. She filed a complaint in Denver, alleging Nemat-Zoda stole over $100,000 worth of her property.

Nemat-Zoda entered a plea in the Denver case, but on Oct. 19, 2023, withdrew that plea. His legal counsel is scheduled to appear for the case on May 31, according to Colorado Court records.

Investigators with the Denver DA’s Office have said they do not believe this was an isolated incident with the suspect’s company, H&M Relocation Services. In 2022, the investigators asked anyone who believed they might have been a victim of Nemat-Zoda to call the Economic Crimes Unit at 720- 913-9179.

According to Colorado court records, Nemat-Zoda was facing four counts of theft for the Weld County case, but the district attorney’s office dismissed two of the charges. According to the Department of Corrections inmate locater, Nemat-Zoda is currently being held in Denver. He will be eligible for a parole hearing in December 2026, according to the DOC.
