Augusta, GA — Did Woods believe what he was saying on Friday afternoon and if he did, were we foolish enough to believe him?

The 48-year-old had just battled not only Augusta National, but windy weather that included gusts of 40 mph and a consistent 20 mph.

The result was a scoring average of 75.079, the worst since the third round of 2016 (75.719), and for Tiger Woods he was 3.079 shots better than the field with an even-par 72.

“I'm right there,” Woods said after his Friday second round . “I’m only eight back as of right now. I don't think anyone is going to run off and hide right now, but it's really bunched.”

You believed Woods since he has won five green jackets and had 98 rounds of experience.

So, you believe him. That was a mistake as Woods shot his worst round in his career around Augusta National with a 10-over 82, the first time he has not broken 80.

“The fact that I was not hitting it very good or putting well,” Woods said after a round that included on five pars on a scorecard that looked horrific. “I didn't have a very good warmup session, and I kept it going all day today. Just hit the ball in all the places that I know I shouldn't hit it.”

Understatement by the best player in the world for most of the 21st century.

Now Woods seems more ceremonial rather than competitive.

Woods saw no positives on Saturday and admitted that he was worn out physically after Friday’s blustery second round.

Now it will be an early tee time on Sunday and Woods will finish the 88 th Masters while the leaders are on the driving range waiting to tee off.

“My team will get me ready,” Woods said about Sunday. “Club has been awesome. It will be a long night and a long warmup session, but we'll be ready.”
