Gold Country Pro Rodeo kicks off in Auburn Friday
AUBURN -- The Gold Country Pro Rodeo kicked off Friday in Auburn. The event is one of the longest-standing rodeos in the state, dating back more than 90 years.The rodeo draws some of the best competitors across the country and is an official stop on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit.This year is also one of their biggest years to date, with about 40 professional riders per night.Tens of thousands of people are expected to be in Auburn this weekend, pumping more than $2 million into the city's economy.Beyond the economic boom, locals say this rodeo also holds a deeper significance for the region."It's amazing to bring the rodeo here to Auburn," Painted Lady rider Victoria Recendez said.Another member of the Painted Ladies Gabrielle Broton, out of Folsom, said, "The fact that we can show part of the history that's been here for years is also just amazing."The event goes through Sunday, but tickets are already sold out.

Twelve Bridges sweeps Lincoln in rivalry clash
Bragging rights were on the line last Friday night at Twelve Bridges High School, as the Raging Rhinos welcomed crosstown rival Lincoln for a boys volleyball rivalry showdown. It was the second time the schools have met in the brief history of the rivalry, with the Rhinos claiming a 2-1 victory over Lincoln earlier this season in a tournament.

The stars were shining last Friday night at Kathy Lund Park in Rocklin, as crosstown rivals Rocklin and Whitney clashed in the 15th annual Hometown Throwdown. The perimeter of the field was lined with fans and youth softball players that were packed shoulder to shoulder to cheer on their teams.
Oakmont takes 2 from Lincoln
The top two teams in the Foothill Valley League clashed last week for a pivotal three-game series with the winner sitting in the driver’s seat for the championship. Winning the league also is the difference between landing in Division III and Division IV in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, where Lincoln and Oakmont were projected to be high seeds.

Oak Ridge High’s varsity baseball team held a comfortable 5-0 lead over Del Oro Wednesday heading into the sixth inning before the wheels fell off. Del Oro railed to score five runs, as the first three batters got on, the Golden Eagles got some clutch hits from Masen Belding and Shane Maloney, and then Oak Ridge’s defense made two big errors to allow Del Oro to tie the game.
