Joel Klatt Has 'Doubts' About One NFL Team's Draft Strategy

A week after the first round of the NFL Draft, Fox Sports' college football analyst Joel Klatt is still confused by what the Falcons did.

"I really hope that everything works out for the Falcons, but I have my doubts," Klatt said on "The Joel Klatt Show: A CFB Pod."

Atlanta selected former Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick and was heavily criticized in the immediate aftermath for that decision.

The Falcons signed quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract during the offseason, and many wondered why the team drafted his backup instead of someone who could help Cousins win right away.

"They invited distrust and distraction into their organization and they will now have to deal with both," Klatt added.

Certainly, one of the biggest storylines during NFL training camps later this year will be the chemistry between Cousins and Penix Jr.

And if Cousins gets off to a slow start with the Falcons like he did last season with the Vikings, calls for Penix Jr. to take over will grow.

Atlanta's draft day decision isn't any less questionable a week after it was made. In fact, it might take years to see if the Falcons made the right call.
