Firth’s Torgerson becomes four-time All-American
Firth High School’s golden age of track and field started in 1997 and closed in 2008. Not a middle age or a bronze age. This was a golden age. TRAIL Experience broadens perspectives for rural education
POCATELLO — Students from Idaho State University recently traveled to Challis to participate in the fourth annual Teaching in Rural Areas Immersion Learning (TRAIL) Experience. Students participating in the TRAIL Experience have the opportunity to take a weeklong excursion in a rural, remote area to learn more about rural education, according to a news release from ISU. This year, the group traveled to the Challis School District, where the participants spent time at Challis Elementary and Junior/Senior High School and at the Stanley School. Throughout the week, teacher candidates visited district and school leadership and learned more about teaching in rural areas. At the end of every day, participants held debriefs to share observations, insights and experiences. Teaching candidates also had the opportunity to participate in fun activities with local teachers and students, including a cake decorating and tasting contest and music concerts. Lani Rembelski, Challis School District superintendent and principal, expressed gratitude to ISU in the news release for being included in the TRAIL Experience. "This is a valuable opportunity for students to experience and better understand the unique qualities of our small, rural schools," Rembelski said in the news release. "Our staff truly enjoyed collaborating with the ISU

'She changed my life': A counselor extraordinaire
“I moved to Pocatello when I was a sophomore in high school and was quite shy and lonely. A very nice person I came to know as a counselor at the school was Mrs. Dee Carpenter. She certainly did due diligence in getting me enrolled in the right classes, etc. But this very special lady went above and beyond — introducing me to teachers and student government leaders, checking in with me periodically throughout the year and always making me feel like I belonged at Poky High. Further, she made me aware of Boys State and the Hugh O'Brien Sophomore Award — which I applied for and became a part of. At the end of my sophomore year, she encouraged me to run for student office — which became a successful and ongoing venture for me. The course of my life was changed because of Mrs. Carpenter.”
