The nonprofit organization Lone Wolf Colony will be holding a Memorial Day observance at its campus in Apple Valley this month.

The family-friendly gathering will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 11 at the Lone Wolf Colony, 23200 Bear Valley Road, organizers said.

"Bring your family out to this one day event and have a great time!" LWC said in a written statement . "All vets and active duty military get a free hotdog or hamburger with ID!"

The event will include vendors, bounce houses, music, games, prizes and more, according to the nonprofit organization.

Volunteers for the event are needed to help with the event, the group added.

Lone Wolf Colony can be reached by phone at (760) 247-7878, or online at lonewolfcolony.org .

The official Memorial Day holiday, which commemorates those who have given their lives through military service to the nation, will be observed this year on May 27.

The tradition dates back to the Civil War era, but was formally signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, taking effect in 1971, according to the National Archives.
